I think it is what we used to call "Vaporware" - it is talked about but does not yet exist. WFD_OPEN_SESSION_COMPLETE_CALLBACK callback function has some links to the API for Native Wireless.
There are buzzwords like "Windows Pairing Experience" which seem to point to Bluetooth as well as 802.11 connectivity; also "Proximity" "Tapping" and "Peer Finder"
Quickstart: Connecting apps using tapping or browsing
Windows 8 Proximity sample
I don't think the App/Applet/Management console snap-in/whatever is available yet to do this, but it probably will be based on scripts to turn on the virtual wireless hosted network adapters using the "netsh" suite of commands.

No doubt someone here will prove me wrong about this! :)

It's supposed to be a feature in Windows 8 - where your phone, tablet and PC recognise their proximity and form a private wireless network, or you tap your x-box with your phone or something, but it isn't there yet.

The WFD_OPEN_SESSION_COMPLETE_CALLBACK function is part of Wi-Fi Direct, a new feature in Windows 8 Consumer Preview and Windows Server 8 Beta. Wi-Fi Direct is based on the development of the Wi-Fi Peer-to-Peer Technical Specification v1.1 by the Wi-Fi Alliance (see Wi-Fi Alliance Published Specifications). The goal of the Wi-Fi Peer-to-Peer Technical Specification is to provide a solution for Wi-Fi device-to-device connectivity without the need for either a Wireless Access Point (wireless AP) to setup the connection or the use of the existing Wi-Fi adhoc (IBSS) mechanism.
The WFDStartOpenSession function starts an asynchronous operation to start an on-demand connection to a specific Wi-Fi Direct device. The target Wi-Fi device must previously have been paired through the Windows Pairing experience. When the asynchronous operation to make the Wi-FI Direct connection completes, the callback function specified in the pfnCallback parameter is called.

Using proximity, you can create a connection between two devices with a simple tap gesture or by browsing for devices within wireless range. You do not need to be connected to a network. You can simply tap two computers together, or connect using Wi-Fi Direct.
For a tap gesture, if two devices with proximity come within 3-4 centimeters of each other, proximity notifies both devices. You can use proximity to enable a quick exchange of data during a tap gesture, or you can use the tap to set up a long-term communication channel using TCP/IP, Wi-Fi Direct, or Bluetooth.

Install connectify on one machine and use it as a hot spot. I've tested it, worked out of the box.

Unless there is a very recent fixed update, it bsods Windows 8. I've seen many cases of it doing the same for 7 as well.

Hello,

Only certain network adaptors are able to do this, they must be Windows 7 certified with the logo or most likely it won't work and could also cause crashes, it's also not tested on Windows 8 yet so it may not work even with the correct adaptor.

This link has the manual method to set up a shared wireless network by Paul Thurrott.

Or you could set it up the easy way using Connectify.
