Two LANs sharing Internet but seperate

I want to set the kids up on their own LAN.

We have an ADSL Modem/Router and LAN for our stuff. Some wired and some wifi and that is to stay as it is.

I want to put the kids on their own wifi LAN bit with Internet access from our Modem/Router.

I have been messing with this a lot and getting nowhere. I have a couple of older routers and I would like to use.

Online I found a sketch for

Modem-> Data Switch +-> Router One 192.168.10.1 wifi and wired to us
____________________+-> Router Two 192.168.1.1 wifi for kids

But can't seem to get that working. Can someone give me some guidance here please?

I do not want the kids to have access to our LAN as it has business PCs on it.

Thanks

Just get a single router with Wifi capabilities, that allow for two WiFi LAN's. One would be for guest's and one would be the main. No need to use two routers, because of the following: You are only given one IP, unless you pay for Static IP's, which cost more.

Only way that they would get on the other LAN, would be if they got the Passphrase, or physically connected to a LAN port on the router.

Thanks, but that last part is not quite true. Once they sign on to the wifi of the second router with a different gateway, they can still see and and access the other computers. That's the problem I am having. I need to have the other computers on Static IPs and defined gateways but that is not good for us to hook to the business LAN using a phone or tablet. We have to go to the computer and see what the IP is, so Static IP is not a good plan.

The Data switch and routers are too smart. I need a dumb old Ethernet hub between the modem and the routers. But dumb hubs are long gone. I kick myself for throwing a bunch out about 6 years back when hubs got smarter and then called a Data Switch.

No you will not CarvedDuck. A router with two separate WiFi LAN's, you can make it so that the Guest cannot see the other, along with the Ethernet connected computers or can see it.

You cannot use a Switch between two routers, unless you are paying for two Static IP's. The modem only hands out one IP as a Dynamic.

Would it not be easier just to use different workgroups names for the computers involved? For example, if you took the "business" computers and assigned them to the "BUSINESS" workgroup, they would then effectively be on a different network for the "KIDS" network would still be using "WORKGROUP" as there default. If you were to browse the network from a "BUSINESS" computer it would only see any computer that is assigned to the "BUSINESS" workgroup and vice versa. Also, I would make sure the "BUSINESS" computers all have "STRONG" passwords and that all SHARES are setup properly without having any GUEST access allowed. Otherwise, to do what you want to do will require a smart switch that you can setup different VLANS.

Anyway, hope this helps...or at least provokes more thoughts out of other users who might have different ideals.

Actually I think most Wi-Fi router can be set to be Wi-Fi/LAN access only. I would set up the business computers Shares access to Authorized Users only Remove the anyone user completely. Or as mentioned earlier just set up a guest partition in your router. Guest will only have Internet Access. Check the documentation for your Router as to how to set it up.
