Hi,

I would appreciate it if somebody can tell me how to Display the "Network Connection Icons" in the bottom right corner of the screen for "Windows 8.1 Pro".

An example of what I am referring to can be seen in the attached sample image taken from a "Windows XP" Computer.

Regards,
Norman

Hi,

Thank you for your response. I tried that but the resultant window with "Notification Area Icons" does not display the relevant "Network Connection Icon" for selection (In Windows 8.1 Pro).

I am using a "3G USB Modem" to connect to the internet. I want to see the incoming and outgoing activity represented within that little "Network Connection Icon" for the active connection. It helps me keep tabs on when data is being transferred and when the active connection is idle by merely glancing at the bottom left corner of my monitor (as was the case for Windows XP Pro, visible in the screenshot that I uploaded).

In Windows XP Pro there is a "check box" that says "Show Icon in Notification Area when connected". I can't find the relevant facility in "Windows 8.1 Pro" to "Show Icon in Notification Area when connected".

Does "Windows 8.1 Pro" no longer allow for the relevant icon to be displayed? If it is available for selection then can you provide me with a screenshot and instructions on how to enable it?

Your help would be appreciated.

You would not be able to see that, unless there is software that goes along with that modem. Windows 8, it shows up as a part of Network Neighborhood. The icon changes, depending on the connection.

This is the tool for you:

I now install this on every Vista/7/8 machine - check box allows you to change it to show Vista style icons or XP ones. Just go into settings of the app, then press the "Indicate Selected Interface Traffic" radio button and select your device from the list.

I installed this 3 times before I got it to work.

What's not so obvious is that it won't appear on the task bar automatically after you install it. You first need to RUN it for the first time and once it's open tick 'Load at windows startup".

What is slightly irritating is that the colour changes are too pronounced. My first reaction was "Microsoft effin idiots" for getting rid of this because it is CRITICAL to be able to see what's happening on you computer when things aren't going right. (e.g. emails not being downloaded!) However Microsoft was right to want to get rid of the "noise" in the interface.

Request to developers: Please can we get to mute the colours somewhat!
