Network Credentials & NAS mapping

Hi,

Hopefully someone can help with this query that after days of trying myself and hours of google searches I can’t solve.

I have a home network:
2 windows 8.1 machines
2 windows 7 machines
D-link NAS – 2 Volumes
Sign on’s are all Local account

All used to connect successfully to the NAS for backup until about two weeks ago then the mappings to the volumes failed and every time I try to map or connect I get a Windows Security box requiring me to “Enter Network Credentials” and my file history requires me to re enter credentials.

I have tried:
Machine user name and password
NAS username and password in straight and \\NASname\Username format
IP address and Volume reference and every combination I canthink of

But to no avail the security box just bounces back and i try again....

I have tried various combinations of on/off in the advanced Network and Internet options, resetting the NAS etc.

Sometimes I get the “Enter Network Credentials” message when addressing the NAS - sometimes I can expand the NAS and then get the message when I try to address the Volumes. Sometimes I get a different message about not having the permission to map the drive instead of the network credentials one – the frustrating thing is the variability in error or message that makes it even more difficult to solve the problem.

i have tried lots of forums and whilst there are people with similar issues none of the solutions that some have found work for me.

Thanks

Go back to the NAS and double check user settings. That they are setup correct, along with the shares are correct for the users. Also that it is on the same workgroup (keep both the computers and the NAS set for "Workgroup").

Then make sure Network Discovery is enabled on the computers.

Thanks for the quick response broe23.

My apologies, I should have added in my post that all computers are part of the same "Workgroup" - I checked that during my trials, and Network discovery is on. The NAS is included within "Network" so is being picked up, its just getting past that point sometimes and even if I do the getting access to the Volumes_1 and 2 where I get to the security window as discussed below.

I have gone back now and checked the shares (although these had not changed recently to my knowledge and as the problem started about two weeks ago) - as far as I can see they are lined up with the users but I will cold towel these again later today.

Thanks

Again, you have to go into the NAS and make sure it is properly set up for the shares on it. As for this NAS. What is the exact model of it? Some of them are just pure garbage. That means that no matter what you do with the computers, the NAS never works like the manufacturer states they are supposed to.

Its a D-Link DNS-320. I understand the point and although things can change it was working fine until a couple of weeks ago without changes to the NAS

If the shares are set up on the NAS for a specific person. You have to use that person's login credentials, which you have created on the NAS, to connect to said share. If the shares are set for Everyone. Then you just have to map to the share and it should connect.

Thanks for your advice. I checked the shares and they seemed fine but I redid the users login credentials again and it seems to have work. I am still puzzled as I had redone the credentials several time before coming to the forum, always carefully and so if i did make a typo then i logically shouldn't have made it more than once. As I have thought i have solved it before, only to find the problem returned i have run it for a period to see if it holds and - so far so good. I am still puzzled as i can't determine what is different in this current set of configurations that wasn't there in the couple of weeks of attempts i had earlier - that is frustrating, but it works now!

Anyway, you were right that the problem was in the credentials / shares area - thanks for your time, help and making me go back to check it again.

There was an update for 8 recently that had to do with certificates and credentials, SMB. Also if you are running any a/v software or firewall, it can mess with things.

Ah, that would explain why i couldn't associate any changes to users, shares or even the NAS to when the problem started. Thanks again.

This is one of the earlier fixes from 2013. But see if the info in there helps. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2845626 Also try resetting IE security levels. That can also cause these issues.

I am having the same problem since moving to windows 8 and I am fully up to date. Can you confirm what you typed in for the domain name as I cannoty figure that bit out and I have tried everything. I dont really have a domain name as its a home NAS!
