Not connecting to Network

I've had Windows 8 Consumer Preview installed for a couple weeks now and all of a sudden my computer stopped connecting to my home network.
I have a wired connection and when I mouse over the network icon in the tray in the bottom right, it just says"Identifying... No internet." I can connect to the internet fine, however I can't see any other devices connected to the network.

Help appreciated, Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome.

Visit the manufacturer's site to download and install the latest driver.

Uninstall any 3rd party firewall and/or security suite if present.

Run this then reboot after (do the manual method):

How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Yes. You might have to manually install with the device manager, but that is unlikely. After updating, just check the driver date in device manager compared to what it is now.

I installed drivers and followed the instructions at the link you gave me, unfortunately it didn't help.
Although, now it says "Not Connected - No connections are available"

Driver Date: 2/16/2012

Sure there are no 3rd party security programs?

Might as well reboot your router and if that doesn't help it, update its firmware to latest.

Set a static ip address in Windows for your adapter, if even that doesn't help. This surely will then.

Hmm...
I definitely don't have any security programs, I thought it was my router at first so that was the first thing I tried, and I originally had a static IP set and have been setting it to both static and DHCP back and forth every time I try something new.

PS. I'm not so worried that it says I don't have internet, I could care less as long as it works, so much as I want to be able to connect to my home network.

In that case, simply make sure DHCP server is enabled in router's settings (after firmware update) and also set the network adapter in Windows to auto.

Could be that the initial problem was the router and now it's Windows' ip settings causing a problem.

So ya, update firmware, enabled DHCP everywhere and it should be alright. Firmware updates fix things like that all the time.

This might be a good time to flush and renew everything IP related.

Flush the DNS cache and restore MS's Hosts file ...
Copy and paste these lines in Note pad.

@Echo on
pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
attrib -h -s -r hosts
echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
attrib +r +h +s hosts
popd
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset all
netsh int ip reset all
shutdown -r -t 1
del %0

Save as flush.bat to your desktop. Right click on the flush.bat file to run it as Administrator.

Your computer will reboot itself.

The first thing you should do is establish what level of connectivity, if any, that you have. To that end, let's start by finding out the IP address. As you're behind a router you'll probably have an address from one of the following:

10.x.x.x
172.16.x.x
192.168.x.x

Most likely 192.168.x.x / 255.255.255.0

From a command prompt, run ipconfig /all and see if your IPv4 address begins with any of the aforementioned.

It would be helpful to see the entire ipconfig/all , screen shots are best for this. :)

Resetting the router a second time is sometimes required to get them working again.

If that's you PC IP address, I'll guess your router is at 192.168.1.254? Try the following:

From a command prompt:

ping localhost (127.0.0.1)
ping another PC/device on your LAN (if you have one)
ping the router (I'm guessing 192.168.1.254)

Everything looks well with that 100%. Should be good to go...what are, if any, the exact issues you seem to be having now?

One thing you can do which is just to be "nice" - go into your router's DHCP settings and set the lease time to be as long as possible or even infinite if it is able to. No need to expire a wired connection for any reason. Even wireless, this is good for.

If you're trying to share with other machines, enable Netbios in the adapter's settings on Windows.

The lease is from my ISP I think, either that or I can't figure out how to change it.
I'm including some screenshots of my problem.

Nah, the lease is from your router. The setting is in the DHCP settings at http://192.168.1.1

You'd likely do well to reset your router to factory settings, reboot Windows then check that address to change the lease time.

To reset router, many times there is a small tiny button to push on it with a pen or similar.

I would triple check that there is no 3rd party security installed as part of an antivirus suite package or similar.

If you don't plan on using Homegroup to share, disable IPv6 in adapter settings and disable the IPHelper service at services.msc.

I don't have a DHCP section. It doesn't really matter anyway, I wont worry about it.

I'll only do a factory reset if I have to because I've got loads of forwarded ports that need to say that way.

I do plan on using Homegroup if I can get connected to the network.
