The setup:
Two Windows 8.1 pro boxes. Each one has a different MS account associated with it. Box A has a shared folder. Premissions set with "everyone" rw. Box B is trying to access the share. When Box B opens Box A in the network it prompts for credentials. (box that pops up is shown below) Box A will accept any username entered, but it will always pop up the box asking for credentials. Why is this happening? I noticed that it is using the computer name for the domain, is that normal? Why would it even need to show the box if the everyone group is added to the share? I've tried everything I could think of, nothing works. It's not just Windows 8.1 that cannot access the share, even a Windows 7 box gets the same popup. My network setting have password protected sharing disabled, and use user account, not homegroup is selected. Network setting are identical on box A and B.

The only thing I can think of is the user Everyone is a local user account while you are trying to access the PC with the MS account set access. For testing purpose, try to switch your PC's to local account to see if you can access it without the popup.

tested with a local account, and no pop-up. Computer and share came right up. How do we get MS accounts in the Everyone group?

The same way that we did it with Windows 7. Windows 8 uses the live account as the username. The password is your network login password.

You set folders to "Everyone". It opens the OS up to problems. One is that you allow viruses to take hold and start infecting the machine, along with others on the LAN. There is a reason why Microsoft layered in certain safe guards into Windows 8. It was not to protect the OS from the user. It was to protect the user from their own bad habits.

I hate replies like this. I know what I am doing and I have a reason to add the everyone group. Also 7 did not use "live" accounts. It used local accounts or domain account if joined to a domain. Do you have an answer to the problem of why local account connect while MS account don't? If not please don't preach about viruses and "safe guards" and other nonsense.

I ended up using Homegroup on my network. I though I never use Homegroup, but with MS accounts it about the only way to have a password less (well...if you don't count the Homegroup password) share. Homegroup is alright, but it feels like amateur hour. Next Windows version I'm going to skip the MS account, beside the app store there is not much benefit to it.

Yes, if you only use Windows 7 & 8 then this would be fine.

I always use local accounts for all my PC's so I can be in control of everything. For metro apps, some of them will allow to sign in separately if needed.
