How to automate sharing when connecting to new newtwork

Hello,

When you first connect to a new network Windows 8.1 opens up the following window:

sharing-2.jpg

I am trying to automate a way so that the answer is always: yes, turn on sharing and connect to devices.

It needs to be automatic without requiring the user to click on the window. This will be used in systems where no keyboard/screen/mouse are present.

Any ideas?

Best Regards,

Skibum1

You have to go to the folders you want to be shared. Just turning on sharing is not going to automatically start sharing the whole drive. It will allow someone to access the drive across the network. Suggest using Password protected sharing. Also if you have any type of firewall running on the machines. Turn it off, and just let your router do the work as a Firewall.

Yes, I have done all that. I do have sharing already turned on, but this window still appears when a new LAN is connected.

If you plug your computer into a new LAN that the computer has never seen before this window will pop up. I am trying to find a way to automate saying "yes" OR stop this window from appearing and just accepting any new LAN connection to share on.

It will always appear when you connect to a different LAN. It is a part of the Windows Firewall/ICS Services. You only want to allow, if you are on your own or a trusted LAN. Personally I would not enable folder sharing out to the LAN, unless you are at home on your own personal LAN. No need for people to be able to see what you have on your computer.

Woiuld you know what services I would have to disable to do what I wish? This will only be used on private home networks.

You cannot. This service has to run.

Once you log onto a network, you can save that connection. You say your only connecting to your home network you shouldn't have an issue? To do what you want you would have to write some code to run during your boot up. I don't understand you wanting to open your computer to any network that comes along no security that way at all. Anyone could log on to your Computer with a smart phone or tablet Yea no security at all.

I appreciate the concerns about security, but that is not an issue for what we are doing. The computers do not have wifi - they only have Ethernet. The computers will not have a screen/keyboard/mouse on installation. We can use RDP to get access to accept the new LAN connection, but it is a step I want to remove.

There must be some way to do this?

You are trying to use a desktop OS as a Server. Again, you cannot remove this Service or disable it in what you are wanting to do. If you want to run a file server, set up one with FreeNAS or one of the other Linux distro's.

If you want to stick with Windows, then get Windows Small Business Server. We call these Headless systems. Due to all they are are a box with nothing else attached to them.

You should not get that pop-up if you just stick with one network. Do not know why you want to take a headless system to various LAN's. If you want to travel with the computer, get a laptop to do that, not a desktop box.
