Hey Brink, I was wondering...when you share libraries, are they supposed to show up as duplicates outside the library on the remote computer? In my case, 3 of them are, and one of them isnt...so something must be wrong..

Hello Orlando,

Yep, this is normal. It's showing was is allowed to be shared with the homegroup for that user on that PC. It'll also show up under Network as well. :)

But how come there is one folder (highlighted) that is not being duplicated? It shows up under Network, under Homegroup's Libraries, but not under Homegroup's drives (see screenshot).

Are the lower ones mapped drives in your This PC window?

If so, does the missing Digital Media Arts show in This PC?

By "mapped drives" i dont know what you mean... and by This PC you mean the host computer yes? On my host computer, all my drives show up under "This PC", (so yes the folder Digital Media Arts shows up too) but I dont recall doing any mapping, whatever that means...

Well, i turned on the column headers for everything that has to do with sharing. On the host, the drives show the same thing. Shared YES, Shared with my name + Homegroup, Sharing Status SHARED. On the remote (laptop), the drives show the same thing, which is pretty much blank except for Sharing Status NOT SHARED. (which i guess is normal because its not the laptop that is broadcasting its sharing).

So maybe this has to do with screwed up NTFS permissions somewhere? Otherwise, WHY (even if normal) does the File Explorer show those duplicates on my laptop? Whats the use? I already see them under Libraries... it just makes my tree longer, more cluttered and confusing. Can I turn the visiblity off so that I only see the ones under the Libraries?

SIDE NOTE: I just went into my Win 8.1 PC Settings --> Network --> HomeGroup and everything was turned off (Docs, Pics, etc). So how come I was able to share despite these switches being OFF?

Already went thru your helpful tutorial.

... in an effort to start back at zero, i decided to remove the shared library. So as expected, on the laptop it no longer appears...HOWEVER, the duplicates all still show and are accessible (except for the one that never appeared).

1. How come they still show? I guess they reamined on status "shared" even though I deleted the library holding them? (im referring to the duplicate copies that shows outside of the library)

2. If I could get that missing one to show up in the list, it seems to me it would be simpler NOT to use the libraries then so that I wouldnt see duplicates... your thoughts on this?

3. Finally, is it possible that the folder thats missing in action has some sort of "Hidden" visibility status checked off somewhere? Its an idea but I dont know if possible.

If you don't mind, please go ahead and give detailed steps on how you have it setup on both PCs, and I'll see if I may be able reproduce the same. Hopefully, I may be able to help figure it out. :)

sure but before i do this, ill try deleting that folder completely and creating a dummy to see if IT will share...ill test that then slowly start restoring its content on subfolder at a time from a backup. im thinking the folder itself may have something wrong with it because i tried sharing the SAME directory from the backup drive connected via USB and it gave me the same error. If i remember correctly, your tutorial says you can share a folder from an external usb drive as long as its connected yes?

UPDATE: Empty folder with same name just recreated is showing up on laptop. This is promising.

Hey Shawn, i think its going to work... i'm almost finished restoring what belongs in that folder and so far im seeing it all on the laptop. I probably wont bother dumping it all in a library then. Oh btw, how come i see the host's libraries for Docs, Downloads, Music, Pictures and Videos when I've only enabled "Music" in the Homegroup setup?

The default libraries will still show up, but you shouldn't be able to access them if sharing to the homegroup for them is turned off on that PC.

Hmm, well i just double checked and the only switch that is enabled in my Homegroup (from the Start screen PC Settings...) is Music, yet I can still access Docs, Pics, Vids too on the laptop... oh and even a Downloads (for which there is no switch in Homegroup settings when going thru Start screen)....

Thoughts?

EDITED: OK double Hmmmm- if I check my Homegroup settings via Control Panel, the settings do NOT match/sync the ones I set with the Start Screen switches. Here they are all shared except Documents. So this is one inconcistency. While I thought this explained something, its even more confusing because this Documents which is not shared anywhere is still accessible on my laptop! Argh....

Your reply brings up an interesting question:

If I want to stop sharing, does it make a difference if I go to "Documents" under Homegroup or "Documents" under This PC?

It should stop it from being shared by the homegroup as well.

Right, I just realized that there is no option to stop sharing it in the Homegroup on the host PC. So I stopped sharing it... tried 3 times actually. Twice by right-click method, and once by ribbon method. It launches the Stop Sharing... window and after 15 seconds or so, that window just closes without confirming that its no longer being shared. When I go to the laptop I can still access the Docs.

Docs are set to not sharing in all 3 places on the host (Win 8 interface, Control Panel, and manually set as described above)

Is it possible that somehow they are bypassing Homegroup settings? I mean, on my laptop I also see Desktop, Documents, and Downloads (all regular folders, not libraries) and i dont remember this being part of the Homegroup options...
