Hi

Hopefully a simple one but unable to figure out a default setting.

Simply for the home desktop and want to share with other kit on the home network.

When I boot up it appears I have to always tweak the settings :

1) Control Panel > System > Change settings > Network ID and select under "Select the option that best describes your network" so I opt for I tick "this is a home computer; it's not part of a business network."

2 )The reboot.

All works fine and all devices can be seen and read/write in accordance with the appropriate share settings.

Now the issue is when I next reboot the

Control Panel > System > Change settings > Network ID and select under "Select the option that best describes your network" will default to "This computer is part of a business network; I use it to connect to other computers at work".

So I have to got through steps 1 and 2 again.

How to I get Windows 8.1Pro x64 to default to the "this is a home computer; it's not part of a business network." on each boot without having to manual configure.

Thanks for your time as usual.

One it is because you are switching back and forth between two different networks. Second Windows Firewall is borked. You may have to open a Command Window and run sfc /scannow . To see if that fixes it.

1) No network is the same, it's home pc on one hub/one network same workgroup etc.
2) ran sfc /scannow "Window resource protection did not find any intergrity violations.

Surely there's a brute force method to set to option 2 withing the Network ID. As its a home desktop and not moved theres no need for other network checks.

Again it is doing that due to the Firewall. Has nothing to do with what kind of network. Are you using the built in Windows firewall, or some third party Internet security product?

a thought

as your using Pro 8.1, the system would assume you are a business, and these would be the default settings.
I think your going to have to edit group policy.
Or set up something in task scheduler.

This is a completely, totally absolutely unnecessary setting for home networks and you should never click / change that. All my home computers show the same if Network ID button is clicked, as do the computers of other users..

NO!

This is not a Firewall issue, not an issue at all, just a misunderstanding from OP's side. It most certainly has nothing to do with Windows Firewall. Leave Firewall as it is, you do not need to change any Firewall settings to join your home workgroup.

You set the Workgroup name by clicking the Change button, you do never need to touch the Network ID button as it is simply a wizard which always defaults to business network when launched.

This is puzzling.

I have not touched any firewall settings.
The workgroup name has always remained the same : workgroup
The pc computer name has never changed.

The host devices have not change workgroup or name settings, all pretty much default.

I have no issues setting up the network, its just that the system defaults to business on initial boot.

The only option at the moment is to remember to switch it to personal every time I shut down, even though it was set from the previous reboot.

The system does not show any of the shared devices unless personal is chosen, business it's all blind except for the host pc (the desktop) on the network.

I repeat what I said in my previous post: that is not a setting, that is nothing your computer is defaulting to. It is just a wizard which you have no reason to use or check. You simply have no reason to click the Network ID button, nor do you ever have to run the wizard it launches. If you want to change either the PC or Workgroup name, simply press the Change button as shown in my previous post.

If all the networked computers are on the same Workgroup and sharing is set properly, all shared devices will be shown.

That was my thought Kari. Someone is over thinking this. Now the question is. Are they using a VPN to connect to the Business network.

I think this is missing the point, whilst I respect what your saying I realise there is one bit of information missing.

So to be clear:

Workgroup is not changed and never has been.
No VPN.
PC is static and the second device is an mede8er x1000 media player.
I am not launching the wizard at any time to solve this, not sure why the wizard is being mentioned.
When the system boots the default "business network" results in the media player share not being seen and can not see the pc.
Once "home network" is selected and system rebooted, full visual and sharing is working. This is the only reason why I posted and thought I was missing something in the default boot resulting in business network and I thought I needed a default in home network. As the home network WORKS. The business sharing network does not. It is nothing to do with the workgroup name or pc name.

So with this rationale I thought if I could change the default boot to home network to the current business network, my problem would be solved.

It has nothing to do with VPN, Shared settings, workgroup names, wizard, firewall as none of these are launched or tinkered with to achieve the share.

Thanks for your time guys. Think I'll live with what I have, it's getting unnecessarily complicated for what I want to achieve and can only think it's actually a setting on the mede8er media player that's not compatible with the business network default.

Thanks for your time and sorry if I've caused confusion!

You are making it more complicated then it actually is. If it is popping up stating Business when you are connecting to your work network. That leads us to believe you are connecting to a domain.

The thing is that you should not be getting anything when switching between networks, unless it is your firewall that is doing this.

Without everything and you helping us by giving us screenshots of these items that are popping up, along with what Firewall software or other software you have on this computer. We are never going to get anywhere. Other then having a discussion about why you keep seeing the pop-up when you connect to the work network, and same for home network.

Hi Broe

I do appreciate peoples help and persistence, just like myself.

Just to clarify:

I am not connecting to a work/business network.
The auto connect wizard is not popping up at all, I discovered this by changing the settings manually and it resolved the sharing issues.
Everytime the system boots it resets to business, unless I have manually changed to the home network setting it prompts reboot and will be fine. Next reboot it reforms to the business as a default.
The internet and network connection is fine, it's only when I need to share the desktop with the media player that the shared devices (hard drive on desktop and the media player) are not seen.
To see the the shared items, the only solution I have found is to select the option in the Network Settings to Home Network.

It is a home static network on a virgin media hub.

There are only 2 devices that need to share

1) Desktop
2) Media player

Only ever connect to the workgroup and the media player will not see the pc and vice versa in the business network option. Only on the home network option in the jpg.

Windows firewall is disabled.
Eset Security Suite 7 is being used and has not been changed by myself so all auto.
When the windows was first installed and the network connected for the first time the wizard did appear as expected and home network was chosen.
I have up'd a load on screenshots of eset settings.

Did you load any software from Virgin Media, that controls your Network connections? Download Speccy from majorgeeks.com and post the URL that it gives you after it runs through inspecting your system.

I have a feeling that there is some third party software causing this.

No virgin media stuff installed. Its a clean windows8.1 install without upgrade.

I did notice in eset nod that theres 2 different ip addresses the second having a (2) at the end, could this be the issue.

I have always used eset and no other software.

You keep posting the same stuff over and over. Please download Speccy from majorgeeks.com and post the URL. Also if you have any third party Network management software loaded for Virgin Media. Uninstall it.

Something has created this problem. We can sit here and chat all day long and guess about it. You need to start investigating on your own why it is happening. We do not have physical access to your computer. So there is no way for us to know what is going on, until you are honest with us. Also you need to supply the information requested.

I own Speccy so have attached for you (edited user name, domain name, hard drive serial numbers and of course windows key as these are personal info).

Reason is people keep mentioning wizard...this has never popped up since 1st initial windows install.

I repeat I have never installed or needed to install any 3rd party isp software= including anything from Virgin, I do not ever install any 3rd ware garbage ie bing desktop etc etc.

Thirdly please do not accuse me of not being honest....that's not in my nature on here or any forums!!

Updated with speccy link see later post

I give up, just trying one more time.

Your first screenshot in this post shows that your computer belongs to a private network. That is as it should be. In Windows 7 you could select the network location between Home, Work and Public:

2014-06-21_10h17_49.png

Windows 8 does it a bit differently only giving you two options to select in between, either a Private or a Public network (tutorial). Going back to your original post, you mentioned:
When I boot up it appears I have to always tweak the settings :

1) Control Panel > System > Change settings > Network ID and select under "[HL]Select the option that best describes your network[/HL]" so I opt for I tick "this is a home computer; it's not part of a business network."

The highlighted part in above quote tells me quite clearly that you are misunderstanding something. That selection is the first dialog in a built-in Windows Wizard which is never needed when setting up a home computer. The selection "This computer is part of a business network" being selected by default does not mean your computer belongs to a business network, it's just a pre-selected option in a wizard you have no reason to run. If you close the dialog without going through the wizard, your settings remain the same as they were.

This wizard, and its pre-made suggestive selection "This computer is part of a business network" are shown if you click the Network ID button which you should not and need not to do as told in this post.

It might be English not being my native language but I am unable to explain this any clearer.

Yes I understand what you are saying..
Just to clarify I am not and have not used wizard since first install, I am not relaunching it.
I am thinking that where you state "...if you click the NETWORk ID button which you should not need and need not to do as told in this post." and broe stating something is broke leads me back to the question...
[h=2]How to "Default boot for Home Network "this is a home computer...".[/h]Like your good self I have resided to the point that I or something has setup a default that is not changing.

Thanks guys I live with how it is. I just need to set it manually or remember to set it manually each time I reboot or turn off. I thought it was simple, but appears there's something under the hood that is broke and I can work around it.

Peace
