Solved Can someone please do the math on transfers to NAS

I have an old W7 system and a new W8.1 system.

The W7 system is WIRED to the modem. The W8.1 is WIRELESS.

The W7 writes data to my NAS at about 36MBps, which, someone suggested was as fast as I could get on my gigabit modem.

The W8.1 writes data to the same NAS through the same modem (wirelessly) at about 5MBps. My modem is N600. Is this the max speed the W8.1 can write to the NAS?

I am considering a new AC1750 modem. Would this appreciably increase the speed my W8.1 can write to my NAS. The W8.1 system is an 802.11ac one.

Or should I just WIRE my W8.1 to my current modem?

How much faster would my W8.1 write to my NAS on the AC1750 modem? WIRED and WIRELESS?

A bit cheeky but could someone please crunch the numbers for me. ;)

I don't even know where to start. :(

No calculations but , if the NAS is wired to your router and the 8.1 has the same gigbyte ports as the Win 7 machine , then wiring the Win 8.1 to the router will probibly give the same throughput as the W7 machine with the gigabit ports (the new AC router will probibly have the same/similar gigabit ports).

Wirelessly , if it's currently an N based router , you're looking at UP-TO 'approximately' around 4 x the transfer speeds if you switch to AC from N and everything is set up correctly, so 20ish MBps.

These aren't hard figures ,( a lot can affect transfer speeds, not just the compatability between the AC router , the AC hardware in the laptop , but the max throughput on the NAS, the size of the cache on the NAS etc. etc. ) , but possible ones.

You can do better using the 5Ghz AC frequency but that won't matter unless you have a clear path to the router, no walls or anything in the way, otherwise the 5Ghz frequency won't give you anything more than 2.4Ghz will. 2.4Ghz is much better at going through walls.

5Ghz AC is great for me and I get nearly Gb wired connection speeds from 30 feet away but,...and this is a big but, the 5Ghz frequency only works at maximum speed if there are virtually no walls in the way. It can be a good distance from the A/P as long as there are no walls.

Yes I mean this fast.

This will give you a rule of thumb. Network & Security Tools - Transfer Calculator - by eSubnet Toronto - When I use Clonezilla and do a clone in NFS mode. I can get upwards of 1.32gb/s on a 100mb/s connection. A lot is how the program is doing CRC, buffering, and whether it is raw data or FTP.

Your mileage will vary, depending on the File transfer type, whether it is over Ethernet or Wifi. Also every OS does file transfer differently then another. A lot has to do with QOS scheming.

At work, when I plug into the wired network, I get about 85-100MB/s (Megabytes per second). When I go to Wireless on our Wireless N, I get at most, 6MB/s. Its about the same at home, but my wireless N at home seems to max out around 4MB/sec. That's fine for surfing the web, but I always plug in when I have to move large files.

Wow chev65, I envy the speed you get. I get about 1.7MBps :( You should be able to download a TV episode in about 5 seconds. :cool:

I suspect you and I are talking different numbers though. I am talking download speed or internet connection speed.

Currently my new desktop (MB Wifi) is about 8 feet from my modem. My old W7 desktop is one wall away (about 17 feet) but wired. That is where this W8.1 system will go when I have transferred my confidence to it :D I am switching on my W7 system less and less as time goes on. :) I still have a lot of questions about "This PC" :D

I expect I will go "wired" to maximise my speed.

Wired or Wireless-AC is going to be the best way to get the best speeds. Of course if the NAS or other device has only a 100mb/s port. You will only get the max that the mfg allows for LAN speed. It all depends on the chipset they use, CPU, RAM, Cache for the device.

Well, if the NAS has a 100Mb/sec port you will see at most 12.5Megabytes per second. A gigabit port would provide at most 125 megabytes/sec. Of course with TCP/IP overhead and such, expect at most 11MB and around 100MB.

Not always true. That is just theory. Every chipset is going to handle it differently. On paper it looks good. But in real world situations, it is not always the case.

That would be about the same speed as local USB3 externals. :D

My NAS is a Western Digital My Book Live 3TB but I can't see any other specifications besides "Gigabit ethernet".

I am not confident with this new desktop (yet) so I haven't just replaced my old W7 desktop with it plus I am going on holiday very soon so don't want to "byte" off more than I can chew (rofl)

You will never get the full 100mb/s. You have to look at the big picture, to better understand what all comes into play. Both hardware and software wise.

I would LOVE 100MBps but realize that's theoretical. 36MBps falls way short of theory, I was/am hoping for more than 36MBps hence new computer and, possibly, a new modem :D

Maybe the limiting factor is the NAS? I am just exploring my options. :D

If I have hit some limit then a new modem wont help. And, considering that I will most likely go "wired", a new AC modem isn't any point.
