Hi, I simply replaced my stock wifi card in my laptop with an Intel 7260 and this created a Wifi2 in my network connections (Windows 8.1). Not only do I no longer see the original Wifi network but I cannot rename Wifi2 to the original name because its still "taken" by the old network connection. Can anyone help out please?

I use Classic Shell desktop and if I click on the wifi signal indicator in the right tray the Networks side bar appears. Then if I click on View Connection Setting at the top it takes me to a screen where I can choose to manage known networks. From there I can choose to forget a network.

You can also change the name of the network in your router.

Right click the wireless network, click Rename and you should be able to rename, I have also replaced my WiFi card and my new network name was changed to WiFi2, after reading your post, I tried to change to WiFi1 and it did.
You have already removed the old card, so you won't see your old network.

Just dig through each entry for the old adapter. When you find it. Just delete that registry entry.

I followed the Registry Editor method... I deleted both profiles that were there in the hopes of starting over! It still said CANNOT RENAME this connection when I tried in the Network Connections. THe original connection named "Wi-Fi" must still be lingering somewhere in the system...

I guess I will just rename it without the hyphen. I just wish I could completely clean up the trace of the former connection that was tied to the previous wireless card.

  • OS
    Win 8 64-bit
1. Open the Device Manager.
2. Click on "View" --> Click on "Show hidden devices"
3. Now go to "Network Adapters" and delete the greyed "Wi-Fi"

And you're done! Now you can rename your new Wi-Fi adapter in its settings.
Way easier than edeting the registry or search ours for the config file.

Happy Day!
