Slow Transfer Speeds over Network

Hi guys,
I have three computers on my home network:
(a) desktop in the office with ASUS USB-N53 adapter
(b) new desktop in the office with fairly old Broadcom PCI 802.11g adapter
(c) media box hooked up to TV hard wired to router

I recently mapped a drive on system A so that it could be shared with system B (they are side by side). Unfortunately, upon trying to transfer files the speeds are terrible! I am only getting between 500kb/s and 1mb/s.
Is this due to my relatively old wireless G adapter?

thanks :S

It could be. You really need to use on both desktops wired connections. If you are going to use Wifi and transfer large files. You may want to invest into a Wireless-ac router and same for the adapters for the computers.

Wireless transfers only go as fast as the slowest connection.

Thanks for the reply. I have invested in a new ASUS dual band AC router so that is possible...
From what I read though, it didn't seem like the jump to AC on the adapters was worth it yet.

I didn't think that G was supposed to be this slow though?

Exactly.

The slowest here is the 802.11g adapter, its theoretical maximum is 54 Mbps or 6.75 MBps.

Don't forget , the max G speed is plagued with routing info / data packet losses , resends and a myriad of other 'stuff' that causes a lot of slowdowns , it's the same with N and AC , but the slowdowns happen 'faster' (if that makes sense).

That is correct. The whole CRC issue gets worse if the adapter on the computer is slowing dying.

There is equipment out there, that you have no choice to use Wireless-b or g with. For example, the Chromecast is one that does not play nice with Wireless-n. I have a HP printer that will only connect with Wireless-g. Even better is that the 3m wifi capable thermostat I have. The radio module in it, will only use Wireless-b.

As for the OP going with Wireless-AC. It is a good move if they plan on streaming movies across the network from a file server. It also future proofs them.

Wireless transfers on my home network have always been pretty fast. Win 7 Laptop to XP desktop (the latter is R46ed to the 802.11 router) runs at about 2.5 Megs/sec. I recently added a cheap Dell laptop (Win 8) and immediately noticed the transfers between the two laptops was slow - around 300kbps to 500kbps. Shortly after adding the new laptop, I went to Black Viper's services recommendations and disabled a few services. Transfer speed jumped to 1.25 mbps. Don't have any clue why, I didn't change any services that seemed to involve networking. In fact, here's some rough notes I took on what I did. Hope this speeds things up for you.

bluetooth radio contr auto to disabled
bluetooth service auto to disable
bluetooth support service manual to disable
certif propog man to disabled
family safety man to disab
fax man to disab
iphelper auto to disab
microsoft iscsi init svc man to disab
sensor monit man (trigger) to disab
windows biometr man to disa
win media player sharing auto to dis

Best you will see on wirelss G is around 2MB/sec. If you are getting around 1MB/sec, you aren't doing too bad. I never like to transfer files over wireless. I only use wireless to surf the web. My PS3, my Xbox360 are hardwired in. As is my home theater receiver (Marantz).

Wireless N really only bumps you up to 4-6MB/sec.

Finding the correct channel helps also. I found that Channels 1 & 5 work great in my area. It took some time letting inSSIDer run for about 30 min's. Before I found the best two for my A/P's. Also ran the microwave, to see if it would affect it.

The antennas on the A/P have a lot to do with connection also. I probably went through four different A/P's, before settling on the Engenius ECB-350.
