Hello! I have a couple questions for someone that would be able to assist. Please bare with me. I am not much of a computer technical person, but i am sure someone who is can help.

I am starting a new work from home position on monday, and the requirements are that i have to have a hard wired connection using a ethernet cable. I have a desk top computer in the living room, which is where the router is, and wireless service through verizon fios.

I would like to work from my laptop, in another part of my home. My question is do i have to establish a second internet connection, buy an additional router and ethernet cable to use? Or can i just purchase a router and ethernet cable, without establishing a second connection, and work off the internet already established in the home?

I also saw on another forum, someone mentioned a wireless bridge that will connect to my wireless and plugged in with a cat6 cable to my laptops lan port. Would that be another option for me? When you hard wire in a home with an established wireless service, do you have to temporarily disable your wireless service?

Any additional fixes i did not mention would be greatly appreciated. Really don't want my computer issues to be the reason of my absence from training on monday, AND I AM REALLY STUCK.

Thanks in advance!

Wireless will work fine. Depending on the construction of the home and where you wish to place the Cat-5e (do not need to spend the extra on Cat-6) lines. Would depend on how much effort you want to go through. Wireless-n would work fine in your case. If you still want a hardwired line. Use Ethernet over Power extenders if you are unable to physically pull Cat-5e.

Okay. Thanks for your response. Are you saying the option of me just obtaining an additional router and using a cat5 (instead of cat6) to be hard wired to my laptop would be fine on my already established wireless connection?

You do not need another router. You already have a router.

As for Cat-5e. It will work fine up to 10gb/s. Cat-6 is overkill.

My network consists of the equipment in my profile. I have a basement. So it is very easy for me to pull an extra line if needed. I have found that with the Engenius ECB-350 Access Point and a POE Injector for it. It serves my home fine for coverage.

I keep a set of Ethernet Over Power plug-in modules. For when I need to redo the setup on my IP camera I have out on my garage, that uses WiFi for its connction to the house network.

It took a lot of trial and error to find the equipment that could handle my network setup. Along with having a WiFi Access Point that covered a 300' radius of coverage around my home.

Confused. You have a wireless router? Then no need for cables unless I'm missing something.

They are wanting to run Ethernet for a wired connection to certain computers. Go back and re-read what the OP posted. Most likely it is due to an uninformed IT person at the company that the wife works for. Still thinks that Wireless connections are unreliable, along with unsafe in this day and age.

Yes I have a wireless router. I did state I was not a technical person, I am just trying to get help. Maybe I am supposed to be saying modem, I don't know.

I HAVE to have a wired connection using an ethernet cable. I have a wireless router/modem in my living room, but I will be working out of my den. Dozens of feet between the two. My desk top is in the living room with the wireless router/modem, but i will be using my laptop in the den. I need for my laptop to be hard wired.

Lol...funny as I am not married. Not sure who "the wife" is in this case, as I am female as well. The uninformed IT person does not exist. Remote employee technical support was closed by the time I reached out to them. I browsed this forum, and saw that they have really helped people with technical issues of all kind, so I decided to give it a try, until they opened in the morning. I agree with wireless being unreliable, which is probably why I have to have a wired connection to perform this job.

I am sure in the morning I will be able to get assistance, as I will be working for Comcast Cable, a cable/internet/phone company anyway. I just really thought I could get some insight from this forum this evening, and even though I have gotten a couple responses, none of my questions were answered.

I just wanted insight on how to establish a wired connection on my laptop in my den, in a home already furnished with a router/modem and wireless internet connected to a desktop in my living room a hundred feet away from the den.

Thank you for replying broe23!!

You will get better technical support on forums, then you will from someone at a company. It is again how easy it is to pull Ethernet Wiring. Wireless is the best way to go these days. The only thing that will cause you to have limited range is the following: Too many Wifi Access Points on or near the same channel that your A/P is on. Distance from the A/P where you are trying to use it.

I use Channels 1&5 on the Engenius ECB-350 A/P I have. I can walk 100 yards away from my home and still have connectivity when the windows & doors are open. Once I close the windows and doors. The range decreases down to around 100-150 feet from the A/P.

Personally I would choose WiFi over wired. One is that you are not tethered to a cable. Two you are free to go anywhere in your home where you want to go. Depending on how large the residence is, along with the placement of the Gateway or A/P. All factors into how well the Signal quality is going to be.

The last thing that factors in is how good of quality the chipset in the device is. I have seen some devices that are better then others in sensitivity in how they pick up wifi.

Really though Comcast Cable is not going to help you with anything to do with your personal home network. Especially if it is with the competition.

I figured out how to do all of this stuff by reading, research and doing. Over 35 years of working with computers from when you had to use a dial-up 300 baud modem to connect to someone else, or to connect to a BBS (Bulletin Board Service, which is basically what today's forums took the place of). To designing and implementing anything from small networks that only had two users, to large scaled networks that had over 500 users plus phone sets.

My home network is what is considered a Small Business network. Not because of the equipment alone that I use. But because of the number of devices I have on it. I really only have thirteen physical wired devices on it. The other twenty or so devices I have in my home. All use Wifi to connect to the Internet. It is a mix of Wireless-b for a wifi thermostat, to Wireless-G for IP Cameras, and Wireless-N for laptops, tablets, smartphones and a couple of IP cameras.

My network went from having 24 physical wired devices to now being only needing five Cat-5e Ethernet lines to connect two Access Points, a 5-port switch and a SamKnows "Whitebox" for network monitoring.

You though are lucky to have Fios. It is still considered cutting edge next to ATT's U-Verse. Along with what DirecTV is doing also with using IPTV with their Clients for the Genie system.

If you really want to find out how good of signal you are getting and any interfering A/P's around you. Download inSSIDer from metageek.net. Walk around with it running to see what A/P's you can see in various rooms and the signal quality. You should have at least no greater then -65dbm for your Fios Gateway. You want to keep it around -58dbm or lower for better connectivity.

You also need to keep it on Channel 1&5 if Wireless-N. Along with 40mhz for Channel Bandwidth, so that you can fully use Wireless-N. You never stated the exact manufacturer or model of the Gateway or A/P that Verizon installed, so these are only suggestions.

Netgear, D-Link, Cisco, TP-Link, Engenius all make plug in units that allow you to expand the Wireless footprint. The units just plug into electrical outlets (do not use a surge strip). One unit is placed where the Router/Gateway is. The Slave units are just plugged in to fill any gaps. The good side is that you are not having to pull any Ethernet wiring.

To add. I doubt that you have a 100' between where you use the laptop and other devices and the den. That would be like me going out to the curb on my street and trying to connect to an Access Point in the Alleyway behind my backyard.

There is 100ft. between the two. I just moved here, and have not set up additional routers/modems yet to have connections all through the home. of course I don't have connection up in the den loft with the one router/modem way in the living room. I do plan on adding additional hardware at a midway point.

Woooooooooow!!!! Ummm Okay.

b.t.w I was not suggesting calling Comcast for personal help, as I have Verizon FIOS. Comcast is my employer, and I would be reaching out to their remote employee technical support to assist me.

Even though Comcast is your employer. Or even Verizon as your provider. They are not going to be able to do anything for you. Your boss, IT manager, or even the CSR for Verizon. Would suggest the same things I suggested. Either go out and purchase plug in Wifi Extenders, or get a better Access Point that has better range. Such as the one I am using.

The other suggestion that they would tell you is to try a different Wifi channel. Or even as simple as placing your gateway up higher on a shelf on the wall.

Question for broe23

Broe23. Hi. I hope you can help me. I need to be able to work from home but I'm required to have a hard wired connection, either cable or DSL but these are not available in my rural area. I do however have access to Verizon 4g -they are coming to install something on my house next week for signal. My question is, is it possible to make it look like I'm using a hard wired service in order to meet the requirements?
