I have set up homegroup on my 2 computers. A windows 7Home premium and a windows 8.1 on my tablet. Windows 7can see and open windows 8.1 files with no problem. Windows 8.1 can see windows 7 files , but cannot open them .A window pops up asking for credentials. I don't know what to do with that
Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm sure you already checked the Library folders to share when you were setting up the new Homegroup?

On the Windows 7 machine, have you checked in the Advanced Sharing settings via the Network and Sharing Center so as to make sure File and Printer Sharing is turned on and that password protected sharing is turned off?

Also check that the time and date settings are the exactly the same on both machines.

Yes I have done that.On windows 8.1 tablet it is a private network and Windows 7 it is a home network. Could that have anything to do with it?

Those settings are correct, Windows 8 calls it a private network these days. Be sure and check the Advanced Network settings in all category's, there is Private, Guest or Public and All Networks which needs to be checked as well.

I'm not sure what you mean by local account?

Homegroups only works when both machines are in the same local network so maybe that was the problem.

I'm confused because you shouldn't have any problems joining your own Homegroup with a Microsoft account unless it was already corrupted.

You might want to create a new account using the Microsoft credentials so you can use the Microsoft account instead.

Well my point was that the Microsoft account should have worked with the Homegroup unless the User account was corrupted beforehand. :)
