Solved Network - Permissions Nightmare ! ! !

I don't claim to be a guru when comes to networks/permission's and sharing, but I've been successfully doing it without any real issues since Win 98.
I thought I would make the leap forward and install 8.1 with all its updates the other day, so far a mistake.
I have always done this with all Windows versions, as soon as the install is complete I change the default directory/location for "My Documents" to and separate data HDD, in this case happens to be my G: drive. Then I share this drive. I only have one user account and it has full administrative rights.
1. First issue is when I fired up my WD Live media player and could not find or access My Documents. It was trying to look where the old folder was located on my C: drive when 8.1 was first installed. No matter how many times I tried to redirect it would not work. I went in and G:/My Documents was listed as being shared. I messed with a few things under permission's and low and behold I was able to access the folder.
2. Ms Office 2010 was installed, and I imported my .pst file and OL wrote the folder to my G: My Doc. I had OL opened a few times and sent mail with NO issues. Today I tried to Open OL and got an error saying I don't have permission to access the file. I went to the file and it shows its shows that the administrator account I log-in with at startup has Full permissions.
I tried creating a new user account and giving it full admin rights, was successful up unto the time when I started try to share and add permissions, it basically came back with an error saying "shared items are not accessible when your computer is asleep". Really, I'm on my desktop yet Win 8.1 thinks its asleep? ? ?
I've never experienced such a nightmare of permission and sharing issue in my life.

I deleted the .pst file of my G:/My Doc, boy did that turn out to be a mistake. What really ticks me of is I have uninstalled Office 2010, deleted everything I can find in the registry and temp folders, but somewhere my OL settings are retained. So when I try to run Outlook it now opens with an error because it can no longer see the data file I was using, and then closes. I just want to do fresh clean install and start from scratch, but Ms had made that impossible. I have run a couple of registry and uninstall cleaner utilities but they are not getting rid of everything Office / Outlook wise. I'm running Win 8.1 Pro

8.1 is no different then 7. I do suggest to people to get the Pro edition of an OS, vs. the Home edition. You have more control over fixing any GPO issues, along with permissions if you happen to have problems.

You probably wouldnt have any problems if you created a homegroup and left everything where it is on install, and just tick off the folders you want to share and add others - also you can share any folder by just right clicking it and select share. If you swap OS'S on the same machine that will alter the permissions when you return to windows 8 and you would need to reset the sharing for folders outside of the Home group default folders available for selection - a error message saying you have no permission to open the folder appears so you just follows the prompt to fix it. With Media player if your music wont play either assuming you linked them previously to different folders or folder then default you would have to fix them the same way.

whest, Home Group actually takes away the control from the administrator of the network. Using regular shares, you can have control of allowing units running different OS's (iOS, Android, Linux, Mac OS, Windows Vista, 7, media servers). Yes you are still going to have conventional sharing running, but you only have to mess with one convention.

The OP is just over thinking everything and making things harder then they actually are.

The deal is, in the beginning Outlook worked just fine, like I said I had sent and received mail for a few hours with no issues. I then did all the windows updates, and after updates where done, that is when the error popped up saying I did not have permission to access the folder. Yet when you go into properties of the folder, it clearly shows my Admin User account has Full control.

Problem is now that even after doing an uninstall of Office 2010, and running cleaners and uninstall tools, there is something hidden somewhere buried, as every time I reinstall, it keeps looking for the same .pst file. I added another folder location and older .pst file and got OL to open, but then it just went right back to the same problem of saying I didn't have permission to access G:/My Documents. Like I've stated in the beginning, I've always had My Docs on second HDD in windows 98, XP, Win 7 and never had this problem. It wasn't until I did 8.1 updates that the error showed up.

I just need a way to get ALL of Offuice's/Outlook settings of my system so I can do a clean install and start from scratch where you setup up OL Pop3 account for the first time. Then once I solve that issue I can try to deal with why the problem of Don't Have Permission to access G:/My documents.

Home group doesn't really do me any good for trying to connect with my WD Live. I now have that problem solved and working

At this point it's best to create a new user account and move the contents of the old corrupted user account to the newly created account.

Fix corrupt profile in windows 8? - Repair

In reality when you create Homegroup it prevents anyone in the local Workgroup from accessing shares on any machine joined to the Homegroup because a Homegroup is really a Domain within the local Workgroup which has it's shared protected from everyone else because of the Homegroups unique password.

You can also easily share the contents of any Library with the local Workgroup by simply adding the "Everyone" share to Library "Share With" "Specific Users", add Everyone to the list then choose read/write as required.

I won't get into the fact that the share's with Win 7 and 8 are set up completely differently. Win 7 shares the Users folder but locks down the Username folder by default, Win 8 shares both be default so they are completely different.

I won't be wasting any time arguing my point because I've already proven it to be correct. :thumb:

I went that route already of creating a new User account, that is partially how I fixed my sharing issue with my WD Live, but it did nothing to fix my Outlook problem of not being able to access G:/My Docs.

At this point I see no way out except to format my drive and do a clean install of Win 8.1 Pro. Then before do any Windows updates, I'm going to create an image so I have something to fall back on, just in case windows updates was the source of my problem.

Did another clean install of Win 8.1 Pro, and followed the below article. This time around Outlook is working with no issues, but once again I can not connect properly with my WDTV Live. I got it to connect to my Desktop, yet it does not see the Documents folder. Its shared, and permissions are Full. I get the error saying it can not connect to the selected source Please make sure selected source is active and available for sharing. It didn't work before windows updates or after updates were installed. I put my other SSD back into my PC with Win 7, and with no issues at all, connected and streamed video. Not sure what Ms has done, but I can assure its nothing on my part.
