Hi there

I must be regressing -- I've forgotten how to do it in windows

I want when accessing a Windows share for the user to have to enter user name and password - but I don't want the user to have a logon account to the Windows machine.

In "Plain" English I just want a user to have access to the Windows SHARE but no access to any other resources on the Windows machine.

Can I set up something like this (example from Linux to windows share) here the dialog box is shown - but I just want to have ONLY access to the shares without having a login account on the Windows machine.

I want also the same type of dialog also for Windows to Windows for users who have Windows client machines.

(It's easy if there is an account on the target windows machine but I might have say 20 users who need to access a share on say a server but they shouldn't have a logon to the machine itself).

(Absolutely SIMPLE in Linux -- that's one area - NETWORKING where Windows still to me seems a real "Dogs dinner" of a mess).

Cheers

jimbo

Hi there

Thanks for the info -- that's not quite what I'm looking for.

Perhaps it's not possible -- I'm not actually trying to use Windows as a multi-user machine but just allow a number of people to gain access to some of its disks / multi-media files. I know that the disks can still be accessed even when nobody is logged to the remote machine but they still need an account on the target Windows machine which is what I'm trying to avoid -- I don't want one Public big folder.

(once the remote Windows machine has started - I logout and actually REMOVE the monitor --it just sits there like a server).

I know I'll have to buy a NAS soon but I'm trying to avoid that as I've got about 15 TB of "useable" HDD's that can easily in theory be shared. (Actually that sounds a lot but full 1080P HD or Blu Ray quality video just EATS up disk space !!! -- and with 4K just around the corner !!! -- I'll propably re-jig these Windows machines to Linux eventually though but I'm getting to the stage where I don't want to have to do all this stuff.

Cheers

I've seen in several places that password protected sharing doesn't work as you would think. This makes me wonder why they even put the options into the Advanced Sharing settings as they only seem to confuse people about the intended functionality.

There is however a work around using the Guest account if you are using Windows server 03 or 08, not sure about 2012.

How to Password Protect a Network Share

This won't work in a Workgroup setting unless you add the user accounts to the PC you need to access, this is because the users won't show up on the "share with" list unless they have an account on that machine. I haven't tested this but the tutorials seem pretty decent. So according to this tutorial it is possible to set up password protected sharing but not without adding the user account to the PC with the shares.
Password Protected File Sharing in Windows 7

According to the following link the best way would be to remove the Everyone share and the Authenticated Users and Users share from the permissions list, uncheck the inherited permissions option, then add the Users credentials to the access list.

I'm pretty sure that the user would still need to have the user account added to the target machine in order for the user name to show up on the access list. This method doesn't use passwords but can be tailored to individual users or user groups.

Share Permissions and NTFS Permissions Folder Access Control & Folder Permissions - AD and Exchange Quantum Singularity

I have an easier way of sharing with certain users by setting up a Homegroup then not allowing the restricted access "Local Workgroup" machines from joining. At that point they will only have access to Library's after adding the "Everyone" share via the "specific users" Add Everyone, set permissions read/write as required.

No real guarantee's on any of this working, as anyone can see Msoft and NTFS permissions do not make this process very easy which I believe is the reason behind the Homegroups which is really a Domain within a Workgroup.

And you still owe me two reps from the last 2 problems I solved for you Jimbo LOL.

I knew that you wanted to avoid creating accounts for them and that is what the old "password for a share" was for, but it's been removed for awhile now. Without having a domain setup, you won't be able to do what you want without creating user accounts for these other users.

I know I'll have to buy a NAS soon but I'm trying to avoid that as I've got about 15 TB of "useable" HDD's that can easily in theory be shared. 15TB of data, LOL. I'm glad that I'm not into downloading and storing video. My home server has a 2TB drive which is less than 1/2 full.
