Internet will cut off every few days - requires restart

Hi,

I was hoping somebody would help me as this problem has been driving me a bit crazy.

I had Windows Vista installed, and have done a clean install of Windows 8.1, but exactly the same problem occurs.

Every few days, my internet will cut. There are no error messages, my network icon says I have internet access. When I use a browser, there are no error messages but links when clicked just fail to respond. When I type in a search in the search bar and press enter, nothing happens.

I generally hibernate the laptop, as I often have open word documents and internet tabs that I like to keep in front of me, rather than starting from scratch each day. If I reboot the computer, the internet returns. I have tried to run "ipconfig /flushdns" "netsh winsock reset catalog", but they require a reboot, and a reboot without doing these things always works anyway.

Any help with keeping my internet on would be greatly appreciated!

When I run trouble shooting, the following error message appears:

Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (Microsoft Corporation) is not responding Detected Detected

Contact your network administrator or Internet service provider (ISP) Completed

Windows can't communicate with the device or resource (Microsoft Corporation). The computer or service you are trying to reach might be temporarily unavailable.

I ran ipconfig and get the following:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.3.9600]

Do not know why you posted ipconfig. That would not show what is going on. Are there any events in event viewer, showing the adapter going offline? Do any other devices on the network lose the Network connection?

Hi, thanks very much for replying. I'm not sure why I posted ipconfig either - I thought I'd seen it requested on another forum and wanted to give as much information as I could. To answer your questions:

Event viewer - had no idea that this existed until you mentioned it. But been on it now and got the following errors when the internet stopped working yesterday evening.

A request to allocate an ephemeral port number from the global TCP port space has failed due to all such ports being in use.

The DSM service was delayed by 31 seconds for a driver query/download/install on device 'SWD\IP_TUNNEL_VBUS\ISATAP_0'

All other devices were not affected.

Many thanks and let me know if you need any other information.

What might be the issue is the WLAN Card itself. I also had a Intel WLAN Card as you : "Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN: and i also had connections issues with it. I first thought it was the WLAN Card itself, as i reinstalled the driver over and over. But it simply fixed itself after i did install Windows 8.1, and did install if over Windows 7, not as upgrade from Windows 7, but Advanced (i did install Windows 8.1 fresh over 7), and then installed the Windows 8.1 driver for my WLAN Card. All of the disconnect issues, where gone. Intel has a simple issue with Windows 7, wherein it can randomly occur, that the connection gets cut, because of multiple reasons, where one for example is that it might happen that at some time, when there are other WLAN Networks around, it thinks its connected to yours, scans for others, and it might happen that it believes it gets connected to another network, when that is not what is happening. So i either recommend you to: Update your Driver (if you already have done that and it doesnt fix it, then its Windows 7), get Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, as i know it fixes the issue, or get a new WLAN Card, what might be difficult if you have laptop of course.

Post the results from "netsh wlan show all". You have to open a Command Window and run. Post which A/P is yours as a notation. Also make sure that you have the latest drivers from Intel® Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN — Customer Support Options for Intel® Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN

Just to let you know. That chipset has reached its EOL (End Of Life). As of 12/31/13. If it is a PCI-e Minicard. I would suggest swapping the old one out for a Intel 7260 Dual-Band minicard Wireless-AC. If onboard and not replaceable. Suggest getting a USB adapter to plug in. The TP-Link ones will allow you to bend them upwards, for the antenna to allow for better reception.

Hi both, thanks for your replies. Just to let you know, I'm on Windows 8.1, having come from Windows Vista - but the same problem exists.

I'm trying to update the drivers first to see if that will fix the problem, however none of the drivers I found to download which were meant to cover the 4965AGN would actually update the driver. This was confirmed in the notes on the page I downloaded the driver from.

Instead I've uninstalled the adapator and reinstalled the driver to see if that'll make any difference. It's actually different one that was on there before (although still from 2010) - but a Microsoft rather than Intel driver apparently. Not sure what that means.

I've also disabled 802.11n mode, which I read somewhere else could help.

Will let you know if this fixes it or not.

Many thanks,

Tom

It all works the same way. Just because they put a ugly front on it, and gave it a number, does not make it different in how commands are done.

Can you please post the requested information. Otherwise, this is a dead issue at this point. As for disabling Wireless-N. That is false information. It does not fix the problem.

Hi, this is the information I get from netsh wlan show all. The access point I use is TALKTALK-CEA6AC, although I also use the Darwin Wireless. I don't know if this makes a difference, but this is from when the internet is working fine.

Thanks,

Tom

About the only problem I'm seeing is you are using WPA2 security but are using TKIP encryption which is outdated and wasn't made to work with the final 802.11n draft which can cause inconsistent connectivity on certain systems.

With a problem that only occurs every few days you would want to make the change to AES encryption by changing the setting in the routers wireless set up page, following the link to forget the old network, then create a new wireless profile with the correct settings, then wait a number of days to make sure the connection is stable. :)
