Can't access certain sites until I reboot - TCP/IP problem

So yesterday I upgraded from a slow, ancient T1 to Verizon's "Home Fusion" 4G LTE broadband. It's amazing how fast it is, but I seem to have a problem where occasionally I can't connect to certain sites.

For example, I'll be surfing Facebook and all of a sudden it'll just stop connecting and I can't do anything. BUT if I jump over to my laptop (running Windows 7) or my iPad, both of which are on the same network, it works fine.

If I then reboot the Windows 8.1 PC, all of a sudden I can access Facebook again, for awhile, until it craps out again at some point and I need to reboot again. It's not just FB either. This happens with a handful of other random sites as well, but when it does I can still access 99.9% of other sites just fine.

One thing I've noticed is that whenever I can't load a site, it seems like it's almost always waiting for some type of CDN-based content to load. Often if I hit the stop button in the browser the page then shows up immediately.

Like when I first tried loading this site, it just sat there forever and in the lower left corner of the browser it said "Waiting for yui.yahooapis.com" then after awhile I just hit X and then eightforums displayed just fine...

Browser doesn't matter. I've tried them all. I've tried flushing DNS, resetting winsock, etc. and nothing helps except rebooting. Another odd thing I noticed while messing around is that I don't seem to have a HOSTS file in the normal location. I can't find it anywhere??

At first I thought this new verizon router just has flaky wifi so I switched to a direct connect via ethernet hoping that would solve the problem, but nope. It's definitely not that because like I said when it happens I can jump on my laptop connected to the same network via wifi and I can connect to FB just fine on that machine.

Both machines are running the same firewall/antivirus setup, and this Windows 8.1 machine is free from all malware, rootkits, etc. I'm really running out of ideas here.

Yesterday I tried testing different DNS servers (Google, OpenDNS etc) but that didn't help. But it did lead to something else weird - today if I try to do the same by opening up the TCP/IPv4 properties for my ethernet adaptor I get the following silly error message:

"In order to configure TCP/IP, you must install and enable a network adaptor card."

Doh. I just tried re-installing the latest drivers for the ethernet adaptor but that made no difference (it's an onboard Intel I217-LM). I've also tried different/new ethernet cables just for kicks.

I'm starting to wonder if the fact that my connections look like a mobile phone while my browser headers/useragent etc. identifies them as coming from a desktop machine is confusing some sites/CDNs, etc.?? Although that means all users of Verizon's Home Fusion service would have this problem and that doesn't seem to be the case.

I guess the weirdest thing of all is that if I can't connect to a site like say FB, if I just reboot then I can connect to FB again for awhile, until it decides to crap out again.

Anyone? I'm at a total loss here. Sorry for the long post but I wanted to try to detail everything I've done so far to try to figure this out ...

Since you are using Cellular for data, you can have issues. As for their equipment being flaky, doubtful. If you want land line based speeds and results. You need to stick with land line service, not with Cellular Service. Verizon like other Cellular providers have been known to throttle cellular users.

Land line service is not available in my area. The best we have is crappy Verizon DSL which is under 1 meg up and down, and totally unreliable. That's why I've been using a T1 ... only 1.5 up and down but at least it was reliable (until recently).

I don't think this is a verizon problem for 2 reasons ...

1. When I can't connect to FB or some other random site on this PC, I can jump on my laptop or ipad on the same network and they can access FB just fine.

2. If this was a Verizon problem tons of people would be complaining about it, and they're not.

You had a T1. That is land line based services. If you had a T1, you should be able to get DSL. Look for a WISP (Wireless ISP) in your area. vs. using Cellular based data services. They are fine when you need a quick connect with a laptop or tablet, for checking email, or sending an update to someone. Not good for what you are wanting to do.

As for tons of people complaining about it. A lot of people complain about Comcast, Shaw, TWC, DirecTV, Dish, ATT, etc.. That does not mean that every single customer has issues with a company. Just means that .0001% out of the total population that is using that provider has either an imaginary issue with the company or is just out to complain about them.

There are real customers that do have problems with a service. When they go to the provider, the problem is solved and the customer states nothing about it. Whether it happened, or it was resolved.

There is no land line based HIGH SPEED Internet in this area. As I mentioned in my previous post, we had DSL and it's under 1 meg up and down and VERY unreliable due to our location. Any time it rains it goes down, etc.

I do not believe it's a problem with the service. If it was, I don't think I'd be able to jump on my ipad or laptop (connected via the SAME network) and connect to the sites that my desktop can't connect to.

You had a T1. That is High Speed Internet Service. As I mentioned with the issue you are having. You will continue to have that with the 4g Cellular service, due to how the provider hard encodes QOS schemes into their hardware.

Also as I suggested. You need to look for a WISP in your area, or maybe go with Satellite Internet, if there is not a WISP fast enough to meet your needs.

Welcome to Windows EightForums, dsiomtw.

Sorry to read you’re having troubles and I see something else is frustrating you. DSL is considered high speed, but not really by today’s standards. With DSL it depends on how far away from the telephone company’s or service provider’s building or rather facility you are. The further away the slower.

Ok, so you changed to cellular. I have a forum friend that lives in isolated woods that has this service. Does it seem to get slower during rush hour and early evenings? Does it happen on all devices at the same time?

Yes there are 10's of 1,000's of people complaining online about their provider services. See my statement in post #4.

I am not going to continue arguing with you on this. I would suggest contacting Verizon about the matter of letting you out of their contract, and you finding a WISP or go with Satellite Internet, if you want real Internet.

No not at all. It's blazing fast. I am getting 50+ Mbps downloads and 18-20 Mbps uploads. The only problem is that I just can't connect to certain sites at times, only from 1 PC on the network.

This is interesting. I have a Verizon 4G Mobile Hotspot for internet service and the same thing happens to me. I have 8.1 Pro installed on my PC with Comodo Dragon as my main web browser and certain websites will stop suddenly stop loading, but when I switch to IE the same website will load just fine. And the funny thing is, after it loads in IE then it will suddenly work again in Comodo Dragon. It is irritating to say the least, but since I can get it working again in short order I have learned to just live with. All in all 4G is very fast, especially in my rural area, which doesn't have much for ISP's other than satellite.

Well there's my forum friend now. Glad you piped in, LJ. :) Yes 4G is fast. Use it myself on my phone at times.

I had an inkling it may be a browser problem, but that it was IE11 being new.

Hi HG. I don't know if its a browser specific problem or not. Maybe if I was running IE as my main browser the same thing would happen. I might just try and see what happens. BTW it also happens with Windows 7 as well. I have 7 and 8 installed on separate SSD's and alternate between them.

For me it has nothing to do with the browser. I have Chrome, Firefox, IE and Opera on this Windows 8.1 desktop, and when I can't access a site it doesn't matter what browser I use. The strange thing is that if I jump on my laptop running Windows 7 ON THE SAME NETWORK I can load the problem site just fine. Same thing if I pull out my ipad - it loads just fine. And if I reboot this Windows 8.1 machine all of a sudden I can connect just fine too. W-T-F.

I'm pulling my hair out over this one. Fortunately none of the sites I frequent seem to be affected, aside from Facebook, but I have to get to the bottom of this. If one day out of the blue I start having problems connecting to my own servers, etc. I'm screwed.

We’ll have to see what the OP posts, but I was thinking since IE 11 is so new that a lot of sites haven’t caught up with it, therefore hard to open or not at all.

Yes there are 10's of 1,000's of people complaining online about their provider services. See my statement in post #4.

There are NOT 10s of 1000s of people with Verizon Home Fusion service complaining about this problem.

People complaining about other Internet service providers are completely irrelevant to this discussion.

Sorry but I don't think you understand anything I'm saying ...
