Hi Guys, I know this would have been asked before but I can't find useful tuts on the web. I want to set my office PC up to be able to remote in from home. The office PC is W8.1. The Home PC is W7. Was wondering if someone could point me towards a decent step by step tutorial. Many thanks.

I use team Viewer, its pretty much as simple as installing the software on each PC. I am more than sure there is some technical process that could be followed, but for me, its software. I had tried a few, I find this one easiest and its free if its for for personal use. Check it out, see what you think.

Setting up wake on lan is a different story, I'm yet to do it on Win 8. I had it running on Win 7 but it was an older motherboard.

Teamviewer over Windows RDP. A whole lot safer and secure. Plus side is that Team Viewer is Cross-Platform capable. Where as RDP has issues when using it on Linux, Mac-OS, does not work on iOS, Android OS, Chrome OS. Without having a third party client, that has a whole lot of limitations.

HI guys, thanks for that. I've just been sussing Team Viewer's web site. Can the software be set up on a PC allowing me permanent access from home without a user generating a new session login each time I want to connect? I couldn't see that feature from their web site. Cheers.

Ive only ever setup one session password between the two PC's I use. From memory you add it to like a favorite list lostindigital

Ive not had 8.1 for long and have been too busy to setup all my system properly. But from memory yes, its available to do a once off permanent connection setup. The best part is it is free for personal use, so having a look and test wont set you back any..

In fact, I may as well install it now and get back to you on it.

So I unisntalled from my laptop (remote) and installed onto my main PC then reinstalled onto my laptop so as I can advise you as best I can.

LINK: Download page: Here Download "TeamViewer full version - Windows" Filename is "TeamViewer_Setup_en.exe"

  • Select basic installation

  • Select Personal/Non Commercial Use, install is quick.

  • After install, a box/the program will open

  • In the "Allow Remote Control" boxes, copy the codes:
Your ID: xxx xxx xxx
Password: xxxx
(may not be needed after setting up "Personal Password in next step)

  • Below these codes, click in the box that says "Personal Password"
(This is done as a part of the "Permanent Connection" you are wanting to have so as to not have to supply new id's passwords all the time)

  • A new box will open "setup unattended access"

  • Click next

  • Under your computer name set a password

  • Click next

  • Create a free team viewer account.
(I already have one but setup is painless, involves supplying an email, use a non important gmail or similar if you wish as they will send you stuff after the initial setup info/confirmation, make sure you have access as I am pretty sure what they send for setup is vital for the setup)

  • Finish

Install the software on remote system. There is a smaller app for connecting remotely but personally, I just as sooner install the main package on both. keep records of the ID etc from the remote system and visa versa.

There is a "computers and contacts" box that opens with the main screen, if you click "add remote computer" here you can add a computer and its ID for a permanent connection.

There is a little tweaking and setup to do for the tasks to be complete, unfortunately as I already have an account I didn't have to go through this process. But I remember its painless.

See how you go?

P.S.

There is also a free "Team Viewer" for your mobile devices to access your setups above.

Yes it can. You would just need to set it up to run when Windows boots up, or WOL (Wake-on-LAN). See the following for more information. http://www.teamviewer.com/en/res/pdf/TeamViewer-Manual-Wake-on-LAN-en.pdf

You will need to set up the appropriate ports on your router. Portforward.com can give you more information on how to do that. You do need to set up Port 5900 on your router. Also if the PC or server you are connecting to. You will need to either use VPN on the router that the PC is connected to, or if Port Forwarding, use a DNS service, to allow you to connect if your ISP does not use a Sticky DHCP IP.

Maybe we could make it clear that the process you posted is for Wake on lan only. None of that is needed to setup team viewer access, only to wake your computer remotely if it is off.

That is why I added that antspants. You never know when someone may turn the computer off, that you need to remote in. Figured that I would cover all bases on the subject.

The only caution is that you let the end user know that their computer may come online at a time, that you are accessing it, to fix something, or load a file for the user to have on it.

Yes. Things seem to have changed over the past 3 years, setting up a WOL on a GA-X58A-UD& with windows 7 seemed to be a breeze, not I have 8.1 and a Maximus VI and I ran into problems instantly. Its something I have to look into pretty fast .. eventually, soon :)
