Solved Blocking Computer from going on line

Hi All,
We are upgrading our office to windows 8, but 1 computer is hardly ever used and is running XP. It will stay with XP, and should not be allowed to go online for security reasons.

All computers are networked, and share printers thru a netgear vpn router. Of cause they all can go online. Question: How can I prevent the XP computer from going online?

I opened the netgear router settings ( http://192.168.0.1 ), but can not find any setting blocking a computer from going on line.
Any one familiar with this router and is able to tell me how to do that?

Hi,
First Go to your DHCP in your router settings (You need to type the ip in any browser then the login info they are by default set to :admin for both)then get the MAC adress of your XP device then block it in wireless lan configuration(by pasting its MAC adress with selecting deny association) like this:

Problem, I don't have wireless, only wired. Also my menu does not look anything like what you show, so I can not duplicate what you show.

1. Log into your Netgear Router
2. Go to LAN Setup and assign a static IP for your XP PC (any IP between 192.168.1.2 ~ 192.168.1.254)
   For example: 192.168.1.4 will bind to the Network controller MAC Address of your XP PC
3. Go To Block Services and add an entry as shown below:
   
4. Reset your router, reboot your PC. This should block the XP PC from accessing the Internet and yet allow it to communicate to all devices within your home network.

NOTE: The screen shot is from NETGEAR 3770 so yours might look different.

well, here is what I did:
I opened "lan setup " and reserved the ip address

then I opened " rules"

I set this up in utbound

I then rebooted the router and the PC, but I can still get on line.
what am I doing wrong

How about this:
What if I delete internet explorer? no one will be going on line, but still have access to the printers and files of all other computers.
is that an option?

Uninstalling IE might affect other Windows features. Personally, I would not do it. However, There are people having it uninstalled by removing it thru "Removing Windows Features".

May I ask what is the Model of your NETGEAR Router ?

Where is the PC looking for it's DNS servers , the router?

I do not recommend that you uninstall IE because it is part of windows and might affect other files and features or you can maybe stop it from the windows feature(turn on or off).and can you plz give me the model of your router so we can help you.

As long as it has SP3, and you have a good Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware on it, along with a good firewall on the router. There will be no problems. Now if the machine is capable of having 1GB or even 2GB of RAM, and the CPU is fast enough, you should have no problem running Windows 7 on it.

Or if it is just within the boundaries, make it a print or Fax server, or use as a Security Camera DVR. You may be able to run FreeNAS on it. As long as there are no hardware problems, make use of it. Or donate to a local church or someone that does not have a computer and use it as a charitable writeoff.

I do like when you go to Support for Windows XP for Enterprise Business is ending Microsoft is making it sound like the sky is going to fall, or the ground is going to cave in on you, if you do not switch from XP to 8.1, or Office 2k3 to 2k13.

There will still be updates for certain items on XP. Just because Support ends for it, does not stop the updates for certain items. If I recall when the support ended for 95 & 98. You were still able to pull down updates up to a year or two later.

I have a laptop downstairs that yes I could probably run Puppy Linux on. But I am going to keep it as a XP SP3 machine, for a test unit, or when I need it as a fall back machine.

The problem is that MAC ID's can be spoofed. Nothing to stop someone from changing the MAC ID on that XP machine. See my reply about using the machine for other things.

MAC ID blocking is false security, just like hiding the SSID. Only way to keep computers from going online outside of the network, is to not connect a Ethernet cord, or use a Domain with Radius.

Really I think that with the OP. Re-purposing the machine for something else, or installing Windows 7 if it has at least 2GB of RAM and a decent CPU, it should still give out a few more years until the motherboard dies.

That is a very old unit. A better one with better management of computers, time they can get online, etc., would be the TP-Link TL-R600VPN. You can get it from Newegg.com for $62. I use it and it is a very robust unit. The FVS318v3, only has a 11.8 mbps WAN to LAN throughput.

I had one that I was testing for a customer around four years ago. We ended up finding that it would not do what they wanted, so sent it back.

Well, the unit may be old, but it does the job just fine.
no one is complaining about the speed, and we all get to do what we need.
the only problem I have is blocking this one computer from getting on line.
So the question remains: looking at post #5, what am I doing wrong?
any one knows?

Your LAN & WAN Users is what you are doing wrong. The LAN User is the IP of the Computer, along with its MAC Address of the Network adapter. Outbound services is for Firewall rules. I really suggest you download a copy of the book, on how to do what you are wanting to do with that antique.

The other problem is that since it is EOL Equipment (End Of Life). It is open to outsiders who wish to get into the router, can since Netgear no longer updates or supports the equipment.

You cannot uninstall the IE, it is an integral part of the OS. You can only disable it.
