BT Public Wifi works on Windows 7 but not Windows 8.

Hi, My internet provider is BT and they have a couple of public wifi signals that I use when I can't get onto my Home Router, I can use their public wifi on my old Acer windows 7 laptop but I'm having a lot of problems with using it on my new Windows 8.1 Dell Laptop, I can connect to their public wifi and it loads the login page fast but then I can't load any other page. Sometimes it works for a bit but then stops out of nowhere or it will only load some of the page and then just stops loading it. Sometimes it disconnects me and other times it won't let me connect to the network at all. I can use it on my little sister's laptop which runs windows 7 and it's a lot faster than on my new laptop and I never had these problems on my old laptop.

I have a Dell Inspiron 7000 laptop which has an Intel Dual Band Wireless-N 7260 adapter built in but I can't use their public Wifi with it so I use an external wireless adapter dongle since I can get faster speeds when connected to my Home Router and it picks three different BT wifi signals but I'm having this issue with all three of them.

Any help would be appreciated :)

Make sure you are using Intel's driver, not Microsoft's driver for the adapter first. Also make sure that you are using the Intel Wireless Zero Config. The latest update for the 7260 was just back in February. As for pages not loading, it could be a browser issue, or Internet Security software issue if you have any loaded.

As for your new laptop being slower, 8.1 is partially the problem. The other could be how much RAM you have installed. Have you checked with Dell's Support site to see if you can install Windows 7 on it? Now you could run Xubuntu 12.04, but will have to install Ubuntu Backports, before you can install Intel's Linux drivers for the 7260 card you have in there.

Now with your unit, you should be able to pull out the Wireless-n 7260 and replace it with a Wireless-ac 7260 Dual-band. If you do not have two antennas in that Inspiron 7000, you can put in a second one either right inside the case, or if you are able to pull the wire down through the hinge and place a second one in the lid, that would be the other option if you do not have a second antenna.

I have found that going with Xubuntu in my Toshiba Satellite. I get better signal with the 7260 I have in mine, and have none of the problems that I did with 8.1.

Now back on subject. You may want to check to make sure that you have all drivers & software up to date. Check your system for any possible malware. Get rid of any installed BT software, which can also cause issues. Also if you are running any third party Internet Security software, it can also cause issues with connection.

I did update the drives but I'm still having this problem, When I connect to the public wifi it works great but then five minuets later it just stops. Sometimes the connection is marked as limited and the only security program I have is Windows Defender.

Something else is causing. Limited is a hard one to diagnose, but easy if you know what to look for. Most of the times it is a router issue. You could try and go into Device Manager, uninstall the device and all drivers (make sure you have the Intel Proset/Drivers).

I cannot post from the UK site for Intel, since it defaults to intel.com. https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Se...oductProduct=Intel®+Dual+Band+Wireless-N+7260

When you install it, click Complete, and Choose Administrator tools, etc.. Then when you use the Intel Proset to manage, go in and make sure Mixed mode is selected. Also make sure that in the Properties for the adapter, that you have it set to choose automatically whether to use the 20mhz or 40mhz band for both 2.4 & 5ghz if you have the 7260 Wireless-N Dual band.

If you get any errors, they will show in the Events, or in the Intel logs.

Hi, I uninstalled all the drivers and installed the intel proset but I have no idea how to open it as it doesn't show up when I search for it.

It should be in the Control panel, and all programs. The Control Panel is the main controlling part of the software. When you right click on the wireless adapter in Network & sharing, does it show an option to use Intel for controlling the wireless adapter?

There are two different sets of that software also. One is just the drivers, the other is the drivers and Proset software.

When you click on the arrow for the Notification icons, does it show the Intel signal icon in there?

Okay, I turned off Hot Spot Assistant but I'm not sure how to uncheck search for ssid's and to check use intel proset tools. Also the only intel icons in the notifications window are for the HD graphics and something called Smart Connect Technology.

Hi there. Why can't you get onto your home router at times? Seems that is your real problem.

Most likely your problem in connecting is IE11 in 8.1 if that's what you're using.

On the Wifi Adapter in the Network & Sharing Center, Click on the Wi-Fi 3. Then you should get a window that will allow you to check that the computer uses the Intel Proset for managing WiFi networks.

Most likely your problem in connecting is IE11 in 8.1 if that's what you're using.

Our Home router works fine but I can only use it sometimes in the morning so I rely on the public wifi to use the internet. It works fine on the two windows 7 laptops but on this one it works for a little bit and then says that the connection is limited and sometimes it says it can't connect to any of them. I use Google Chrome and it says I'm connected to the wifi but chrome tells me that there was not data received or it can't connect to the internet or it was unable to accesses the network.

Click on the Wireless Properties button. In there, there should be a set of boxes, with one to check to allow you to use the Intel Proset tools for managing wireless connection.

You see the arrow between the keyboard and remove USB device icon in your picture? In the hidden icons, does it show another Wireless signal icon. That one would be the Intel Proset tools wireless connection.

As for the limited at home, but not on the Public. Like I stated before, it is an issue with your home router. When was the last time you did a reboot on it?

That is where it is getting confusing. If he did the repairs for Windows and also for the DNS, IP Table, Winsock, the problem should be gone. I am thinking that the OP is running some kind of BT software, along with a firewall, that is killing it.

When I click on Wireless properties I don't get an option for the Proset

And also, I had the BT Wifi App but I uninstalled it and I removed chrome from windows firewall and then added it again and restarted the laptop and now the problems are not as worse but the wifi will sometimes disconnect and also won't let me connect and sometimes says it's limited but not as much as before.

No you will not get that option if you are using a USB adapter, that does not have the Intel chipset in it. Also using multiple adapters, can cause DNS & IP Conflict issues. Due to the different types of controlling software each one uses.
