Wired Gigabit network speed maxed at 10mbps?

tried wired and wifi same exact speed, as if its capped?

I know a far bit about networks set my own up using servers and stuff in my basement and even tried a store bought router in case it was somehow my ddwrt router which it wasnt

I have a new laptop ASUS ROG 17" G series its running 8.1

the source server has 6 147gb 15,000rpm sas drives in a raid dual gigabit network cables running esxi and ubuntu server with dual gigabit network cables, extremely fast speeds

everything is up to date on the laptop as far as I can tell I updated all drivers the gigabit network is using a Qualcomm Atheros driver from 7-16-2013 version 2.1.0.21 signed by MS its not a "genetic driver" or whatever sometimes shows up under device manager

I have another normal desktop running 8.1 as well and it has no problems with network transfer speeds they exceed the drives capability to write to in the target drive from the server raid as does pretty much everything else I have, the server can serve files faster than anything can take them

but the laptop seems to be capped at exactly 10MB/s according to teracopy (windows explorer transfer shows 11.8MB/s but I suspect its wrong its probably 10 thats what my router clams its going at not 11.8) and the graph is a steady line as if its capped like that

what could be causing this problem, I can transfer from an external usb 2.0 drive faster than this network? - I have tried wired and wifi the speed is the exact same

Change network adapter speed from automatic top set at 1Gbps. Might also be a driver issue on the laptop, check for an updated driver.

Wireless well be much slower unless you are running on 802.11ac. I usually max out around 6MB/sec on 802.11n.

Lets also see what your network hardware is. What is the manufacturer & model of your router. What is the manufacturer & model of your switch. If you have a separate access point, what is the manufacturer & model of that. If you have equipment wired through Ethernet, did you make sure that they tested for all wires properly terminated (ie use an Ideal LAN wire tester (they run around $60)).

I will post all the specs when I get home posting this from my phone and I dont know everything off hand

but that shouldnt matter since like I said it works with other 8.1 computers and all other stuff on the network

I am posting this from another computer so I cant just show a screen shot but I ran the test and its 21ms ping, 20.11 Mbps down, 5.50 Mbps up concast cable - this through wifi didnt try wired but since the problem is the same on wifi and wired that wont matter on both wifi and wired transfer speeds are the exact same

a speed test to the internet will be irrelevant as you will only have a fraction of the bandwidth to the Internet the you would have on your home network.

Would need that pparks1, but also the OP needs to check the adapter settings as suggested earlier. If they are not doing the suggested fixes, not much more we can do. Also if it is wired, they need to get a tester to check to make sure that there are no faulty keystones, patch cords, wires, etc..

This could be as simple as a bad patch cord, or a bad ethernet line from the patch panel or switch, to the computer.

The OP is talking about LAN speed problems, not Internet, so speedtest.net (which is the most inaccurate speed testing site on the web) is useless in this regard.

~12MB/s is the maximum file transfer speed on a 100MiB/s connection. Obviously the NIC is connecting at 100MiB/s instead of 1GiB/s.

OP, first check that your ethernet cord is a cat5e or cat6 cable. Look at the print on the cable.

If its either, than check your NIC advanced settings.
Win+R and type ncpa.cpl and press enter.
Rightclick and click properties on the ethernet connection.
Click configure and look through the options for link speed. Set it to gigabit-full duplex.

If that fails or there is no option, refer to your NIC specifications, and look for a chipset driver for your NIC (assumjng its gigabit). Stay away from OEM drivers and go straight to realteck or whichever chipset mfgr's site fir the driver.

Note: for true internet speed testibg, use TestMy.net Broadband Internet Speed Test

yea I know the speed test is useless but I figured if I said that I would just get someone saying to do it so I just did

all cables have been swep tested not to mention I have tried different cables

unlikely its a cable or switch problem if it dont have this problem with the other computers - and it also has the same problem on wifi so that shouldnt matter since its a different network adapter, it must be the OS causing this

this is the only computer that has this problem on all different wires I have tried

I have taken a wire out of a computer thats wired and working properly running windows 8.1 its a desktop I built about 2 months ago - I took that cable and plugged it into the laptop and still its at the same speed

I will confirm if the OS is causing this problem later I will try ubuntu and see if it has the same problems

Try uninstalling the driver for the Network adapter, then let Windows reinstall the default driver. Do not do any changes to it, when it reboots. Then see what happens when you do a test with Lan Speed Test between two computers. You can download it from majorgeeks.com.

It can also be a router or switch issue. What did you use to test the cables for patch cords, and between the computer & where the other networking gear is located?

It does not matter if it is Cat-5e or Cat-6.

You're right, CAT5 cable can carry a gigabit connection, but in the OP's case, he might need a better cable.

CAT5e is recommended for a stable and reliable connection. So using what was designed for gigabit, rather than what gigabit was designed to supposed, could possibly remedy the situation. Seeing as the OP has disappeared, he probably got it all worked out.

nope sorry I didnt disappear I will post back when I figure it out if I do I have just be busy I work on weekends away from home

its not a crappy cable or hardware that I am aware of it is probably a driver issue I will post back and let you know, its strange how its limited to an exact speed not going up or down - but does windows 8.1 moderate network transfer speeds if it detects problems in speed will it just cap it and lock it in at 1 speed?

I like this forums (new here but used seven forums for years) I always get good support so I wont just leave this without marking it as solved if it can be

well its not solved, I have reinstalled the driver by removing it and letting it reinstall by it self and it still does the same thing

but this doesent matter, I got this laptop for my dad and really the only thing it is for is internet use, I know its stupid to get a gaming computer for this but it was the only one that had these 3 things - 17" matte finish screen - higher than 900 vertical res - good speakers - those are the only things my dad needed it for

so it doesent matter because I was only trying to transfer some files and noticed it was slow over wifi so I tried wired and it was the same exact speed even though I turned off the wifi and it was wired - but it could only be a problem for streaming videos I guess from my servers

but this is strange since the speed test shows faster speed and in fact I can download files faster than I can transfer them, I have a server remotely at another house and its hosting some files I can download them up to nearly 20mbps but local servers on the same network is 10mbps

anyways thanks for the help I havent solved this so I dont want to mark it as solved but I guess I am done so thanks for the help
