Wifi seems fine but isn't. What's wrong?

So,

I installed my wifi PCI card's driver, and it seemed to work fine, as you can see here:

01. Driver installed ok.png

Even in my Network Connections, all systems seem go...

02. Device listed in Network Connections as Wi-Fi.png

But when I go to my PC Settings, there's no wireless tab...

03. No Wireless in PC Settings.png

Then again, when I click 'Network', then 'Connections'...

04. But in Network - Connections.png

There is a disconnected Wi-Fi connection...

05. There's a Wi-Fi disconnected connection.png

The Network bar to the right when I click the connectivity icon only shows my LAN connection, though, and even has no Airplane mode or any adjustable setting...

06. The sidebar which is supposed to give me scanned results only gives the cable network.png

...
This has gotten me confused. It looks as if I got a working wireless card, with a working driver, but have some kind of settings turned off or disabled, which I just can't seem to find... Why would it list under my Network Connections and PC Settings Connections if it wasn't? But then why doesn't it show up or isn't it of any use?

netsh.exe reports I have no wifi card installed, though. :/

Any help would be welcome as I'm lost...

Greetings,

~ Nephatiu

Welcome Nephatiu,

Can I suggest you look at Brink's Tutorial Wi-Fi - Turn On and Off in Windows 8 and 8.1 on a pc. This might help, or wait for a network expert to answer your question.

I think I'm going to have to wait as that page just tells me stuff I'm unable to do, as you can see in my screenshots. :p

Option One: I don't have an external on/off button;
Option Two: My sidebar with Network Connections only shows the wired;
Option Three: I don't have "Wireless"in PC Settings.

Now,...

I tinkered a bit with all sorts of drivers, making Windows BSOD a few times a long the way, eventually installing Sitecom WL-121v2, WL-121v3, which both gave the same as mentioned in my OP, then when trying WL-115 to try if the LAN-Utility which came with that version would run on other Sitecom drivers no Network Adapter could be seen in Network Connections anymore and I clicked the Driver Rollback function in Windows, which reverted it back to WL121v2.
The reason I mention these steps is: Now my Wifi is connected to the first open wifi it found, which I had to find out myself as it does not state any SSID or Wifi signal quality in the Status-window like this:

07. Tinkering got me connected without options.png

I still have "No wireless interface on this system" in netsh, the connection icon in the Charms bar is still just the one it would be if it was my LAN cable connected (which is pulled out of the system right now, fyi), and I still have no "Wireless" settings anywhere what-so-ever.

It seems to me the underlying Windows 7 base is accepting it as a valid wifi, but the new Windows 8 layer is seeing it as a wired connection. And because Microsoft took out all wifi connection settings from the underlying base, leaving only the Windows 8 touch settings for it that don't recognise my wifi as wifi, I'm a little stuck here... :p

Was the Wi-Fi card pre-installed + drivers, or did you install the card? If you installed the card and drivers try re-seating the card uninstall the drivers and start over. You could also check Microsoft Forums faq's for help with 8.1.

Download Speccy and post the URL that it gives for the results. Really cannot see anything in that first picture. Post a screen shot of Device Manager showing any errors. Can you also post the results from the following (open up a Command Window and type in the command in quotes): "netsh wlan show drivers" also "netsh wlan show all"

Greetings,

Have you tried disabling the Ethernet connection to see if Windows will pick up the wireless?

With older wireless G adaptors you may have a hard time finding an updated driver version for those. It may help to fill in the static IPv4 settings in this case.

A screen shot of the ipconfig/all would really be helpful. :)

Sorry for the delay, I've been spending all this time looking for and trying solutions, to no avail...

Ok, here's the ipconfig /all:

08. ipconfig all.png

And here's a few netsh interface commands showing the problem...
Note: I have installed a few different drivers already with different names, but with the same device's hardware ID's, to see if any of them worked better, as I don't actually know which one is the actual maker. (There's absolutely nothing written on the card itself.)
Also Note: The card that isn't working is "Wi-Fi"... The "Wi-Fi 2" is an USB dongle I lifted from one of my other pc's temporarily to see if that one would work fine, and it did. It can scan and it can connect.

09. there is a netsh interface for it where everything seems ok for wifi but still no wlan inter.png

And as asked above, here's some 'wlan show drivers' and 'all' screencap, but since it only mentions "Wi-Fi 2" and "Wi-Fi" can't be found as a wlan interface, even though everything in windows shows it as a wi-fi card, it's of no use...

Also as asked, here's the Speccy-link:
http://speccy.piriform.com/results/pTxXQTpE7Da7Wvp43cCNdKy

EDIT: Oh, right, and I did already disable and disconnect the Ethernet adapter, and I also reinstalled the drivers many times, from different vendors, but with the same hardware-id, and all give exactly the same result, which is logical as the only thing changed between vendor's files is the name it's given,... The .sys-file remains exactly the same for all, so...

Grtz,

You are showing using two wireless adapters, with one in use. The ZyAir should be working. If not, pull that USB Dongle. Reboot the computer and try and see if Wireless works then.

Your computer is running multiple instances of what should be legitimate programs, but can be malware in disguise. If I had to take an educated guess, that machine is infected, and needs to have the malware steps taken on it, to clean it up of any infections.

Broe23, I'm a programmer and sometimes even more, so, those things I've tried multiple times already,... It's the first steps I take (usually more than once). :) Also, there's no spy-, ad- or any malware on it,... I can be sure because it's a clean install that hasn't seen any internet until now I'm installing it and the first things I've put on there we're V-scanners and such to protect it from any attack while putting it online and almost all changed code has been done manually. ;)
The USB Dongle has been put inside to see if it wasn't Windows missing files to be able to search for wifi, and has already been returned to it's own pc, so like I said: concentrate on "Wi-Fi" and don't mind the "Wi-Fi 2" connection as it was a temporary one for testing.

As you can see, I have drivers that make them connect automatically to the first open network they see, but I just can't seem to have any control over that particular driver/card to scan myself, connect to anything I choose or to even disconnect it without disabling it.

In short: No, it''s the driver/card at fault here, not spyware, not adware, no virusses and the Dongle was just to check if Wireless even worked on that OS. (I was thinking it had forgotten to install files for it, but the Dongle has proven that theory wrong as well.)

So please, the basic stuff I've tried, and the usual hacks too... I've even tried editing the driver files with a copy of the Dongle's drivers next to it, but I couldn't seem to find any difference, as the Dongle identifies as 'wireless_#' and so does the card. :/ I can't seem to find what's wrong with it, even while engineering backwards...

And I'll have to find it, because it just can't be a magical driver that just doesn't work without a reason. ;p

EDIT: Oh, and the ZyAir or Sitecom or Funkwerk (FEC) or BL or ... -card is just a Prism Javelin or Prism Xbow ISL3886 card, so I've tried all possible variations of this card's base for drivers, where ZyAir was the one I tried at the time of the last screenshot. It's Sitecom 121v2 that first got it to access the internet automatically, but now I'm looking for a way to make it show it's scan results and instead of connecting automatically to an open, letting me choose a protected network.

Grtz,

~ Nephatiu

This is still the problem here. > With older wireless G adaptors you may have a hard time finding an updated driver version that will work with Windows 8.1 as G is over ten years out of date and in most cases support has ended for these devices.

You can still get to the wireless security settings by bring up the status window then click on the Wireless Properties button as is showing in the picture.

It may help to fill in the static IPv4 settings in this case. This may help you get around any issues with picking up the default gateway.

Pull up Device Manager, and in "View", click on "Show Hidden Devices". If the old USB dongle is still showing in "Network Adapters", right click on the adapter, and do an Uninstall, along with the box to remove all device drivers".

If you are wanting the Zyair to be your only Wifi adapter, once you remove the other, then it should be your primary. When you boot up in Windows 8.x, then you should be able to connect to your Wireless Access Point.

As for system scanners, you only need one for making sure that the system stays clean of any malware. When I was looking at your Speccy, there are multiple instances of mmc.exe, and also showing you running a torrent program.

Decide which Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware program you want, and only run that one program. Running multiples as I stated, will cause issues. Also they can affect your Networking adapters. By that, I mean that they can "Firewall" the connection, to protect from allowing malware or intrusions coming through.

Changing back to Windows 7 is not going to solve the problem you are having with the adapter in Windows 8.x. I have been seeing a lot of Microsoft Signed drivers that are being downloaded through Microsoft/Windows Update, causing problems. Easy way to solve that, is to download the driver from the adapter or computer manufacturer website, if the network adapter came pre-installed on the computer.

Open up a Command window, and run the two following commands and paste the results: "netsh wlan show drivers" and "netsh wlan show all". Do not copy the quotes.

1. I have the latest drivers and already tried any alternative with the same hardware ID, all giving the exact same result.
2. I know how to bring up wireless settings, like I said, I'm a programmer, so I really know my way around Windows.
3. I have no Default Gateway problems... It's actually one of the things that does work as it should, while illogically skipping any previous steps... Explain to me how this will help me finding and connecting to a secured SSID? ;p

broe23, same thing... ;p

1. Having uninstalled, reinstalled and updated drivers 100 times already in any order or way imaginable, I don't see how doing this again would help anything. :)
2. I started out with only the wireless card and added other because it didn't work, so going back there would only send me back to start. :p Doing this however makes my computer say everywhere that it's not connected and has no internet, but at the same time downloads and surfs just fine on that open network,... It doesn't even show it as a wired network in the Windows 8.1 GUI.
3. Multiple mmc.exe means I have a few certain Control panel windows open (like Manage Computer, as mmc means 'Microsoft Management Console') and it's not a scanner of any kind. It's just me fidling and backwards engeneering Windows to see what's wrong...
4. What's wrong with me running a torrentclient? Doesn't everybody these days? My Virus-Scanner (of which I only have 1) is called ASCU, not MMC and as I needed to download it, the problem was already there before it got installed,...
5. I'm running exactly 0 firewalls on the pc, as this is done by the router...
6. I never download Microsoft drivers, it's the Microsoft drivers that need replacement every install and the wifi I'm trying to get to work had no Microsoft drivers for Windows 8.1.
7. Returning to 7 would help it, as the driver I'm using now actually does work in 7, but I don't want 7. I still have it on a few pc's and I have found more bugs than Microsoft has fixes for it. (Yes actual code-bugs, not stuff I did wrong. I tend to open stuff up and look at the code to see if I can't fix it, which didn't help my driver-problem yet either, btw. Like I said, everything in it seems right comparing to a working one of a USB dongle. ;p)
8. "Open up a Command window, and run the two following commands and paste the results: "netsh wlan show drivers" and "netsh wlan show all". Do not copy the quotes." Like I said 2 posts ago and as clearly be seen in my screenshots of exactly the thing you're asking me to do again, you can see that it's not listed as a wlan driver or interface,... 'netsh' and Windows 8.1's UI see it as a wired card, while the underlaying Windows 7-remains of Network Connections sees it as a wireless card. Result: it autoconnects to any open network without any scanner or any controls for it what-so-ever, except maybe indeed the IP, gateway and dns, but that's not the problem here, so... It also does NOT show any SSID or network strength in the Statusbox, but it does say the wireless speed is at 54k,...

Not to blow you guys off or anything, I appreciate the fact that you're trying to help, but please consider helping me as someone with twice (at least) the IQ of the regular computer-user, as I know all the standard tricks and even tried to backwards engineer it to work... :p No need to ask if I tried turning it off and back on again. ;)

And please, try to read everything I said before answering, not asking me to do things abundantly again ;p

Unless you post the information being requested, we cannot help you. Stating that you are a programmer, that is fine and all. But you came here for help. Not giving the information we need, or refusing to allow us to help you, is like telling your auto mechanic that your car makes funny noises when going down the road, but you never take it into the shop.

We really need the information from netsh wlan show drivers & netsh wlan show all, along with having you fully remove the old dongle drivers in Device manager, before we can go any further.

If the Zyair is getting a Wireless connection, then I would say that it works. But right now all we are doing is running around in circles, due to you refuse to allow us to help you on this problem.

chev, broe, again, I didn't mean to attack you guys and just point out the facts, I can be straightforward and I know this sometimes has the effect of making me seem like a jerk (and maybe I am, I dunno), but it's all just to make things progress...

chev, I admit I could've mentioned it does not display where you said it does, I dunno if that's because it's 8.1 or because the driver is not fully working, but I expect the latter... Sorry again for the brute answer.

broe, I just wanted to point out I'm a programmer, not too brag about it, but to enforce the 'plz don't ask me to do the noob stuff first' question. ;) There are many coders and it's nothing to brag about or special for that matter, just proves I'm a geek, that's all. :p Also the fact about 'twice the IQ', mentioned in previous post, isn't really bragging either, since I meant there are a lot of very dumb people online these days. I loved it better 20 years ago, when it was only us nerds that ruled the BBS scene and so on... ;p

Anyway, since you insist, and trying not to act any more of a jerk as I already did :)p), I'll do what you asked and post the screenshot of wlan drivers and wlan all, so here it is:

11. wlan drivers and wlan all.png

Note that I'm currently connected through the Prism XM card which was in a previous driver arrangement called ZyAir, but goes by many names, all basically using the same Prism XM card (LSI 3886 SUBDIR 003717CF) driver. It looks like this when connected:

12. Network Connection looks.png

13. Wi-Fi Status window looks.png

Which all looks very Wi-Fi to me, as it's also standardly being added with the name "Wi-Fi" (the dongle became "Wi-Fi 2" when it was installed), except for the missing signal quality and the missing SSID. There are 2 open networks here, one is mine and the other is a hotspot with a portalsite to login to, both have broadcasted SSID's. It randomly selects one, and according to the IP I can find out which one, other than refreshing a browser tab which will open the portalsite if it's the hotspot. If I then disable and re-enable it, I usually get the other one. Problem is I don't need it to connect to my open wifi, I need it to connect to my protected wifi (because the open one has no access to the network for security reasons, of course). But when I go to the Properties chev pointed out, there's no 'security' tab and when going to the Windows 8.1 Network and Communications Center, it shows it as a wired connection like so:

14. wired Wi-Fi.png

Making it impossible for me to get it to scan, (after which I could show networks, select one myself and enter any security info) as there's obviously no scan function for wired connections. :p

Feels as if this is more of a Windows 8.1 error than it is the driver's, since it's actually able to do what it's supposed to, but Windows won't let me control it the way it should.

I cannot read that Thumbnail screenshot. I need you to Copy the information from the Command window and paste it into a message. That is really the only way we can tell what it states.

If wifi is working, there is no problem. If it is not working, then you possibly have bad drivers, or a failing interface.

Lets scratch everything we have already discussed and start from beginning.

What is showing in Device Manager for Network adapters at this time. The netsh wlan show all, should have shown the Zyair Wireless adapter, if it is still installed along with the drivers.

If it shows a Yellow ! and the Wireless adapter name, then there is either an issue with the drivers or the physical adapter itself.

Latest driver I used is now called something else, but whatever it's called, it's not listed as a wlan driver, indeed. However, it does show up in the Network Connections as the icon above (with the green signalmeter on it and the possibility to display the SSID and Signal Strength in the Statusbox) and it's added with the default name set to 'Wi-Fi'.

It connects on installing the driver to any first open network it can find and stays connected to that network until I reset it, after which the cycle restarts.

Once connected, it's shown everywhere else as a wired connection, except for the sidebar that comes when clicking the network icon, which just says there are no connections available:

15. No connections are available.png

Apps like the Windows Store won't acces the internet as they apparently check this instead of testing actual reply's to servers. I think all Metro apps work this way and thus can't access the internet.

All desktop applications however work just fine, as I'm also answering you right now over the 'wired connection' my wifi is faking via my open Wifi-AP.
So the only thing I need to do to get it to work, if you ask me, is to get the driver to tell Windows specifically that's it's wireless and not a regular wired ethernet adapter, but I can't seem to find how Windows 8.1 identifies this difference.

In a perfect world there would just be a line of code I'd have to add to the .ini file of the driver itself, but even if that existed, there's nothing documented on it that I seem to be able to find... Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places, maybe it's just in my dreams... However the fact that it's able to do what it should by itself proves that the driver works, imho. Now only getting Windows 8.1 to follow. :p
