Solved "Find Devices and Content" turns off every time I reboot

In the PC settings, under network, I turned on Find Devices and Content. This sets my network type to Private, which allows other devices on my network to see and share files, etc. This works fine, except that every time I restart Windows, that setting gets turned back off, and it reverts my network connection to Public.

I'm running the latest updates for Windows 8.1. I have an onboard Intel 82579V NIC, connected via ethernet cable to my router.
I don't have any antivirus or anti-malware software running except for the built-in stuff from Microsoft. Is there some setting I missed somewhere to keep it from doing this?

Thanks, but that article didn't seem to help. I'm not setting the network to Public, I don't want it set to Public. I've set it to Private by going to Change PC Settings, clicking on Network, clicking on my network connection under Ethernet, and then sliding the Find Devices and Content switch to On. When I then go look at Network and Sharing Center, my network is now listed as Private. Everything works great.

But after I restart Windows, I find that the Find Devices and Content switch is turned off again and the network is set back to Public, without me having changed any settings.

With the Network changing back to Public that may have something to do with the type of network you are connecting too. It's also required that you turn on Network Discovery etc. for any particular Network that you connect to as Windows creates a network profile using those settings.

You didn't mention but did you turn on Network Discovery etc. in the Advanced sharing settings as is shown in the link? I already mentioned this in my first but there was no reference made to this?

This is also a required step in order to make a particular Network either Private or Public.

I suggest you follow the directions for this precisely because there is a reason for everything I can assure you. ;)

Is this 8.1 Pro or 8.1 Home? If Pro, it is easy to fix by the SecPol.msc. If Home, it has to be done in the registry. Your problem is usually caused in part of the Creditionals for the adapter getting screwed up.

See Option three in this link. See if this fixes this behavior. http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/9837-network-location-set-private-public-windows-8-a.html

Thanks. I haven't had a chance to try this yet. I will tonight. But I do have Pro. Which policies need to be changed?

If you looked over the link I already posted you can clearly see which policy needs to be changed.

You should follow the directions to turn on Network Discovery etc. which is also outlined in the link, this is the most likely reason the setting is not sticking after a reboot.

Changing the network location type of my network to Private under the Network List Manager Policies section of the Local Security Policy control panel seems to have fixed the problem, at least it survived one reboot.

I tried to point that out a couple posts ago by posting the link that shows pictures to the required security policy although if the Advanced Sharing settings were adjusted after adding the new network then the network security settings would not typically be required.

I'll post the picture of the required policy from the link I posted earlier.
