Hi, I'm having trouble sharing files from my Vista Laptop to my new Win 8.1 laptop. I can get into my shared public folder but nothing else. I want to be able to get at anything in my C drive but it says I don't have permissions. I have a home wireless network but I also hooked them together with an Ethernet cord and both networks are showing.

Last week I was running into a window asking for network credentials on the Vista laptop (but I didn't know what it meant because I never had a password ). This time I see the folders I've shared but can't get into them except Public folder. I've read a lot and tried a few things but have yet to find my specific type case.

Anybody want to help?

I've got a story about a laptop battery fire to share.

Make sure to set a password.

It is always easiest if all machines on your network have the same user/pass but that is not mandatory.

If you still want Windows to login without typing anything at all, use netplwiz.

If you need full access to the entire C drive then you will need to add check marks to the Authenticated Users/share then add check marks to the Sharing tab/Advanced settings of the C drive per the link below.

http://www.eightforums.com/network-sharing/36363-windows-8-1-map-network.html

It's not safe sharing the entire C: drive and from a security stand point it's safer to only share the Users folder which is shared out by default on Windows 8.

I'm not really sure which way you need to share in this case but there are literally hundreds of tutorials for this online.

Thanks chev65, but that didn't work. I ran into a multitude of Access denied windows for various files on the C drive permissions and many windows of the same trying to set permissions on the users folder. I ok'ed them all and tried to access from the Win 8 laptop and had the same issue.

I was just trying to find an easier way to transfer files from my Vista laptop with the fire damage from the battery fire to my new laptop that doesn't have an optical drive. I have games installed on the old one that I didn't want to lose. Some of those have folders in the root directory and that's why I need to access all of the C drive. I can't just reinstall the games. The pictures, videos, music and user docs are easy enough if I buy and external optical drive for the Win 8 laptop. The end game: to pull the hard drive from the Vista laptop and send it to Laptopbattery1 for a check for $400.

There are no other accounts or users on either laptop. I'm the admin with no passwords set ( I might not be logged on as admin. ??) I've tried a few tutorials. One tutorial about the difference between homegroup and workgroup, one about Regedit and Lmcompatibilitylevel, and I seem to have gotten past the problem of having no network credentials ( or did I? ). I mean I can look in the public folder.

Thanks for taking the time and I'll check back if you or anyone else has a solution.

The procedure to share the C: drive as outlined in my first post definitely does work, those permissions change every time you attempt to share files form the root of the C drive, that is how it works.

And the entire Users folder is shared by default on Windows 8 so I'm having a hard believing you can't access any of those folders unless something simple has been over looked. Workgroup name the same, time/date in sync, etc. Network Discovery and File and Printer Sharing turned on, you know the routine.

:)

Turn off "Use sharing Wizard (recommended)" in Explorer folder options and set sharing permissions on folders or drives you want to access for "Everyone".
