Windows 8.1 limited internet connection. Roll back driver?

I have windows 8.1, Sony Vaio Tap 20, with a Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless-N 135 driver and I constantly get the "Limited Internet Connection". Actually this problem went away for a while for the most part, but now its back with a vengeance. I have read online that people have been rolling back their drivers to previous version (pre windows 8) and that has helped their problems.

I am not computer savvy enough to try this without some expert help. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Its a family computer with work and family info on it ad I don't want to crash our computer by accidently doing something dumb.

thanks

Chev,
Here is what my device manager says:

Driver Provider: Intel
Driver Date: 10/31/2013
Driver Version: 15.10.5.1

I clicked the link you provided and downloaded the new driver and it saved to my desktop. I clicked on it and got a intel icon but then it went away. I then clicked "update drive" in the device manager but it says its up to date. Doesn't seem right. Thoughts?

Just wanted to add this, I went to Intels website and used this online tool to check my system and do the updates: Intel® Driver Update Utility for wireless networking

So it said I needed to update my driver and I did. I restarted the computer and went back to the device manager. It still says:

Driver Provider: Intel
Driver Date: 10/31/2013
Driver Version: 15.10.5.1

So I went back to the intel link tool and ran the tool and it now says:
Product Detected Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 135
Current Driver Installed
16.7.0.0

So it seems the device manager isn't updating?

What usually works is to uninstall the old driver in Device Manager, then take the option to browse to the new driver then navigate to the new version and install from there.

Try rebooting etc. it may take awhile for Device Manger to pick up the new driver version number.

If I disable or uninstall my driver my network crashes.

Yes installing a wireless driver would require a disconnect if that was your only connection.

Why not just use a wired connection until after the wireless is fixed.

Here is where my lack of computer skills come into play. I plugged my router straight into my computer and I am still getting the no network error until I re-enable the old driver.

Try installing the driver in Compatibility mode for 7 (which might work, but I never do this.)

Better to install in Device Manager: Right click wireless, update driver software, browse my computer, let me pick, have disk, browse.

The trick with Intel drivers, especially wireless, is usually that you have to have the installer running, but don't let it install yet. Just leave it sit there. Then do the process above I outlined, and the .inf you want to double click on should be somewhere in your user temp folder:

%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp

Edit: But looking at it more, this link should really just auto-install straight away for you (if Windows = 64 bit): http://downloadcenter.intel.com/con...ng&Dwnldid=23492&OSFullname=

So is this Intel driver only for WiFi???

Maybe Sony support has a method to control your computer and do it for you, if you show them what needs to be done, in this thread.

Yes of course it's only for WiFi. One for the Ethernet as well. Are you saying you tried the Ethernet port and still no connection?

You really need to get the Ethernet working first then go to the Windows Update Center to install all the latest updates, there will be a long list of them at which point the new wireless driver would most likely be installed automatically.

Or try the Sony support site, click where it says "detect your VAIO" there are many different methods to update this system at your disposal.
