Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration

I've had my modem connected straight to my computer via ethernet cable and never really had any problems. I recently downloaded itunes to listen music on my ipod and i know this probably isn't the problem but weeks later i was prompted to download an update for itunes and of course I clicked restart after update but start up computer and internet did not work. It was this "Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration." I've tried resetting the modem and nothing. It is worth noting that I reformatted to see if it would fix it but nothing. but once i connect my modem directly to my laptop it works perfectly fine. I also including attachments so i could possibly be better assisted. Also worth noting my motherboard is a Asus crosshair formula IV which unfortunately doesn't have updated windows 8 drivers but never gave me problems before. the ipconfig with black background is the laptop ipconfig.

Uninstall Bonjour service. Reboot.

Let us know if you need some commands to run after that to fix Winsock. Probably not.

I just realized how not specific the information on my post was. Let me restart. The problem consist on my desktop computer. Internet only works when i plug my ethernet into my laptop that i never use. I can't uninstall bonjour because i reformatted my desktop. The service does occupy my laptop and ill uninstall there anyways because i hate apple services.

Ohhhh...I understand now. There is no problem, per se.

It's your isp limiting the device connected to the modem. They only want you to have one connection. 99% of people have a router (you should too for security) - the modem is expecting a certain mac address (your laptop now) and will not offer services to anything else.

Two ways to go about it:

Unplug modem for some time. Maybe 10 minutes. Maybe an hour. Maybe never. Then try again with desktop.

If that doesn't work or you don't want to deal with it like that, call your isp and explain to them that you need it to work for your desktop machine connected straight to modem.

But ya...I can not stress enough that you should get even a cheap router and connect your desktop to that.

Or if you decide to get tricky on them, you can spoof your desktop mac address to match your laptop's mac address. lol Probably best to call them instead. ;)

I see. Well I do have a belkin router that i used to use but one day i think something similar to my problem now happened and I was too lazy to try and fix it so i just plugged ethernet directly into my computer and just left it as is.

lol :)

So ya. Attach the router correctly to the modem, then call and tell isp you need connection fixed and your end is going to stay as it looks to them now.

I called my ISP this morning and he said he's going to send us a new modem. It will come in on Tuesday. Hopefully it will work then
