Can't Get Folders To Share With Workgroup (not homegroup)

Hello, so I am trying to set up a workgroup, not a homegroup, and all of the target computers are setup in the default group "WORKGROUP." I'm using a workgroup to allow cross platform sharing. Anyways, when I right click on a folder then Share With > Specific People > Add the workgroup is not listed. I can't share anything if it doesn't let me! Please advise.

Thanks - Microzee

I don't think you can share with a workgroup that way.

I beg to differ: Share files with someone - Microsoft Windows Help

Scroll down and click: to share files with workgroup or domain.

That method of sharing, where you add the User names to the "share with" list only applies to a workgroup where all members are using the same machine which may not apply in your case.

For PC to PC sharing you would use the Advanced Sharing link in the page you posted a link to.

What Chev said , you can't share the folders to different machines on a workgroup by using share with specific people , that only works for people using the same machine or a homegroup.

Click on advanced sharing on the top bar and then advanced share to share a drive on a workgroup over several PCs.

There is no place to click advanced sharing. Advanced sharing only works when I right click a drive or a system folder. All other folders give me the options: Stop sharing, Create or join homegroup, specific people.

EDIT: After doing a search, I found you have to uncheck the use sharing wizard in folder options view tab. Now I assume I just click share and thats it?

You should realize that by default all of the Users folders should be already shared in Windows 8.1.

Unless of course you inadvertently joined or created a Homegroup without realizing it which is very easy to do.

If you did accidently create a Homegroup then your files won't be shared with the Workgroup unless you first leave the Homegroup or choose "Share With" then choose "Specific People" then Add Everyone to the access list, Everyone refers to machines that are part of the Workgroup.

Then if you need to unshare a folder you can do that very easily for your personal files which show up when you click on your User name under the Network folder like in the picture.

What exactly are you trying to do?

I was trying to get sharing on the workgroup to work. I first needed to know how to share a folder. Anyways, I figured out my problem after trying to ping another computer on my network and getting no response. Something was up with my router, so I did a hard reset and that fixed the problem. And for me, only the public folder is shared in the users folder. That can be disabled in advanced sharing options in the network and sharing center.

Yes routers tend to do things like this on a regular basis.

You don't need to know how to share a folder because the entire Users folder is pre shared by default. And yes you can turn off sharing for the Public folders and the Users folders by using the Advanced Sharing Settings.

You also just click on one of the folders shown in the picture and then choose "Share With" then choose "Stop Sharing to unshare that particular folder.
