Recommendations for wireless setup

Recently, since I've had my desktop from PC Specialist, the wireless connection on this has been fluctuating in terms of speed; sometimes it would give me the glorious speed of the fibre optic connection I have, while other times would make me want to smash the antennas off at the back.

All I am wondering is what I should do/get in this kind of setup to improve the connection. I have:

Who does the other two networks belong to? Are these guest networks on your own router?

As you can see, all three networks are on channel 11, all three have extremely weak signals.

I wouldn't expect this connection to work very well at all because of the poor signal strength, changing to a different channel, like channel 1 will at least keep the channels separate so as to eliminate overlapping channels but it won't really help the signal strength which is a real problem here.

You really need to move closer to the router and turn off those guest networks, of course with the guest networks turned off then it won't matter if you change channels.

Well all firmware's are different so I can't give precise directions but there are settings to turn off the guest networks someplace.

I suggest setting up another access point because the signal strength here is not good. No magic button fix for this, wireless is only as good as you make it. :)

There are plenty of A/P's for that price but the problem is it would also require a wire going to the A/P. You can also set up an old router as an access point if you disable DHCP.

Some access points also have a bridge mode which allows the use of Ethernet connections to the bridge, but bridged connections will cut the bandwidth in half so not nearly as good as a wireless access point.

With this weak connection there is no way online gaming or HD streaming will work reliably but I'm sure you already found that out.

If your router has a QoS setting, disable it.

I believe I've disabled it. I did it going via the connection's properties in Windows, and unchecking a box labelled 'QoS Packet Scheduler'.

You have to do it in the actual router setup. That is if your router even supports QoS.

Ok I have to speak up here, QoS will have zero effect on signal strength, period. It won't help anything in this case.

QoS doesn't do anything unless you set it up on a per IP basis so disabling it will do nothing because it's not set up.

Turning off the other two guest networks may help but the signal strength in this case is simply inadequate. No magic buttons will fix this.

The only thing fixing this problem is either moving the router closer to the PC, moving the PC closer to the router or installing an access point.

Sorry, I thought he was also having speed issues. My mistake. QoS can negatively affect speed in some situations. You are correct, nothing to do with signal strength.

Well thanks for that. But all that's left now is to decide on an access point, since the other two suggestions are out of the question.
