Ping via Hostname SLOW, via IP FAST -any ideas

    Hi there.

Host machine on same network LAN address on WLAN - perfectly good connection / internet etc

Windows machine to be pinged -- BLACKDOG on but on a LAN (Ethernet)

Both PHYSICAL machines (i.e not running inside VM's)

FROM BLACKDOG no problem pinging BROWNBEAR either by Host name or IP address

BLACKDOG in the Ethernet connector seems to have a Connection specific DNS suffix WAG320N (Where that came from I haven't a clue !!) - It seems to be the HOSTNAME in the router.

BROWNBEAR pinging BLACKDOG via IP address --works fine and shares accessible via mount via IP address.

Now when BROWNBEAR Pings BLACKDOG via Host name (BLACKDOG) it returns slowly PING BLACKDOG.WAG320N( -- haven't a clue where it got that IP from !!!.

Looks like I've got a DNS hose up somewhere

Anybody got any suggestions as to "Unhose" it. I don't want to refer to BLACKDOG by IP address each time since after reboots this will change (should be managed by DHCP). I haven't a clue on WHICH machine the problem is on -- BROWNBEAR is WIFI connected while BLACKDOG is on Ethernet.

    Windows networking Grrrrh !!!!!!

IPCONFIG for BLACKDOG (Ethernet connected) shown

Router Ethernet settings shown (should I have a Domain !!) Always worked without one before

The problem is that Brownbear is having trouble getting name resolution for Blackdog.

From blackdog, open a web browser to What Is My IP Address? Lookup IP, Hide IP, Change IP, Trace IP and more... and let me know if that is the IP (

Are both machines part of the same workgroup, or the same homegroup? What OS is on each.

I've recently moved to a new place, where I share a WiFi connection with other tenants (meaning I have no access to the router or the direct external Internet connection, which however I know is fiber optic, very fast and stable). I didn't use WiFi at my old place; so, when I moved here, I...

Win 8.1 Very Slow Ping Time and Reduced Download Speed
For once I am posting a solution instead of a problem. I had complained to my ISP about a hesitation and speed issue. They agreed to upgrade my service from 15 to 25 Mbps. However when the guy was here to check the system he got that increased speed on my old Win 7 laptop, but could not get it as...

It started downloading 1 MB per second, but proceeded to drop to 150 KB per second and didn't go any higher than that for the remainder of the download. Why? I...

What makes a computer slow/fast?
In general, what makes a computer slow? Considering its not any form of malware or having too many stuff installed. By slow I mean, e.g., when youre playing a game and it takes a long time to switch to another window. When I hear about it, RAM and processor are the first things that come to my...

Hey guys, I hope you can help me fix my problem since I don't know what else to do. I have a Sony VAIO laptop, I'm not very knowledgeable and I've gone through many of the threads here but all of the solutions I've already tried and the problem still persists. By the way I have the latest Win 8.1...

I can't access another PC on my network by Hostname
I'm running Windows 8 on a laptop over WiFi. My main computer is Windows 7, with a wired connection. In Windows Explorer, attempting to access \\STUDY2 (the main PC) works only about 20% of the time. Usually it gives the 0x80070035 error. This also means network printers (\\STUDY2\HP LaserJet)...
