Solved Wireless internet slow on W8 pc

Hi,

I am using a W8 pro pc connected to the internet wireless. My modem is a 802.11g and my speed should be 8 mb down 1 mb up. However, on the PC I am only getting 1.2mb down, 0.5 mb up on speedtest. When I open a W7 HP laptop, I do get about 8 mb down as stated. Weirdly it is only affecting my pc. I have run the test continuously between the PC and the laptop and the laptop perform better. Tried IE and FF, the speed is slow. I have no idea why this is so. My PC specs should be good enough for a fast connection. No folding or torrent or whatever is running in the background, yet the pc is slow. The ping time is faster than the laptop at 42 ms.

Any ideas?

G routers are about ten years out of date, at the very least you will need to update the firmware on the G router in order to expect a decent connection. What is the model number and make of the G router?

The router was provided by my internet provider. The router is fine. I have updated the motherboard to the latest drivers. So all is fine now. After moving to W8.1 everything became slow. Laptops are having decent connection.

Thank you

That's good then, usually the driver updates are automatic although sometimes a visit to the Asus support site is required.

There are certain ISP's issuing G modem/routers combo units, that look new although the technology is over ten years out of date so I'm not sure why they are using them because G routers limit the LAN connection speed to just 54Mbps.

In every other case with an old G router it would require a firmware update.

I bought my own n router, however, my ISP's package is 8 mb over copper. So a g router will be enough. Also, for them it is cheap to source a g router. I have a lifetime warranty though. So if the router goes, I get a new one. Part of the deal. Since it is over copper, I get more than 8 mbs anyway. Sometimes below. Not really fixed.

Got the drivers through asus's website. People with Asus mb have to check if are on win8.1. It screws the line quality quite a bit.

Yes 54Mbps won't slow down ISP's speed connection to the internet "much" but the LAN speed is below par for any decent HD LAN streaming, moving files across the LAN is also 5-6 times slower than with wireless N so consider that if you decide to upgrade to an N router or access point.
