Hello all,

I am using Windows 8.1.
From computer Windows 7 or Windows XP, I can not map to driver D$, E$, C$, etc of computer Windows 8.1.
When I select map network and enter path of computer Windows 8.1, then windows request enter user name and password. After I enter complete, windows request enter user name and password again, again, again.

Would you like to help me about this problem ?.

Best regards,
nocandcan

When that happens , it usually means the login failed and normally means that an incorrect login/password is being used

Not have, I tried enter user and password correctly many times, but windows still request enter user and password.
I think, this can be windows update but I have not found the reason to explan this.

It isn't an update you need, it's the right account. If you are typing the username and password alone, you are using the account on the computer you are using, not the one you want to access. In order to do that, you must type computername\username, then password. Computername is the name of the remote computer.

If you need full access to drives that were created under a different user name it's required to add check marks for full/partial access for Authenticated Users on the Security tab of the drive.

It's much safer from a security stand point to share from the Users folder rather than the actual drive letter or root of the drive.

You can also do this from the drive letter if you require full access to all files on the drive.

The top picture shows check marks added for Authenticated users from the C: drive>Properties>Security tab, just click the edit button then add check marks which for me they all clicked on at once, you can adjust the level of access here, hit apply/OK to save settings. Only do this if you require full access to all system files. It's not as safe this way and this method should be avoided in most cases.

The second picture shows the C:\Users folder>Properties, which shows full access as been checked for Everyone in the workgroup. This is a safer method to share the drive because any Users or Attacker will only have access to the Users folder rather than all system files.

The third picture shows the default "Sharing Tab" setting for the Users folder.

The default setting is to share all Users folders then you just un-share the ones you want private by going to the network folder in the taskbar, choose your User name there on the list just above "This PC" which will bring up all Users folders 4th picture.

At that point you can just right click the folders one at a time, choose "share with" then Nobody to un-share that particular user folder.

You can also choose to share with a specific user which is where you can add Everyone to the access list. The Everyone share relates to users who are in the local Workgroup but are not included in the Homegroup. This allows for selective per machine sharing and the ability to restrict access for users in the Workgroup while giving the Homegroup full access. :)

I am sorry for my late reply.
Thanks Gweezel
I also enter remote computer name but not accessed.

Thanks chev65
1. I also established access right as you but I have not accessed.
2. If I share folder as you, I access OK.
On windows 7, we can access network drive with special share right ($) normally.
But to my case, I can not be accessed.

Best regards,
nocandcan.

Temporary, I refresh my computer so other computer can connect to my computer by special share drive ($).
But if can, I still want to find the any way to solve this problem. Because in the future, may be my computer or your computer can happen error as this case.

Thank you so much,

Those directions I gave you are iron clad for drive sharing, if they aren't working for you then you have set up a problem with your shares or User account but I have no idea what you may have done to your shares so can't give instructions beyond what I've already posted.

Your direction is good and information security when we share files on the network.
I have learned one new way in your direction.
Thank you very much, chev65.

I'm glad you figured out my explanation.

These drive share settings are really an expansion of the default settings that Windows uses for the C:Users folder.

You can also set up selective user sharing by setting up a Homegroup along side a Workgroup but that trick is only for the big kids. ;)

These drive share settings are really an expansion of the default settings that Windows uses for the C:Users folder.

Easing up the security for this folder allows access to only the Users folder which is safer than sharing the entire drive.

You can also set up selective user sharing by setting up a Homegroup along side a Workgroup.

Yes, I will share files on only one folder to ensure safety for my computer.
Thank you very much, chev65.

Your welcome. So you can get into those drives now that's good, you can mark as solved if fixed. :)
