Windows 8/8.1 Networking

Pardon my ignorance on some of the nuances of networking, it is all pretty new to me (I am getting long in the tooth).
I wonder if anyone who is a bit better versed in networking can help me out - I have messed around with a number of settings in a desperate attempt to make my internet pages load a bit faster - I use Chrome at the moment and it is very slow at opening pages - "Resolving Host" issues - I have already been through the various steps suggested online for the Chrome browser and they really make little difference.

I will post what I have got set up and if someone can tell me if this is correct or not it would be appreciated - (I do have a working Internet, just slow)

Connection to the main ADSL (7Mb/512K) is via a Billion ADSL 2 router that is in Bridge Mode - so it just connects ADSL-the next hop as far as I understand it.

The kit that does most of the work is a brand new Linksys EA6700 Router.
The router connects to my main PC using WiFi - the PC has a Broadcom WIFI card built into the motherboard - and when connected is running at 300MBs. (My two ethernet LANs are disconnected in the BIOS)

The second PC, two smart TV's and a PS3 are connected via Ethernet via a Linksys 5 port switch - basically a single ethernet cable runs into the next room from 1 of the ethernet ports on the router and links to a 5 port switch.

This is the bit where I cannot understand whether I am doing this right or not -

1: The router has the capability to add DHCP reservation - which as far as I understand means that once set - my main PC will always be given the IP address of 192.168.1.131, is this correct - it seems like it is working OK.

2: In Windows 8.1, I go into the Wireless adapter settings under IPV4 protocol - (THIS IS THE CONFUSION FOR ME) and various configurations seem to work, but no real change in performance -

a) I initially set up the WIFI settings with "Obtain IP address automatically" and the same for the DNS - Works OK, but still slow with Chrome (IE 11 locks up the entire system periodically so it is now in the trash)

b) I then set my ROUTER DNS to the Google DNS - 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, again seems to work but still slow.

c) Now should I be doing this or not? My current set up is using Google DNS setup on the router, and in my Wi Fi adapter set up under IPV4 - it is now set with the following "Use the following IP address - 192.168.1.131, subnet 255.255.255.0, Use the following DNS - 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, (does this make a difference if it is entered here as well as the router????)
The default gateway is set to my routers address, 192.168.1.1

Do you see any possible conflicts with this sort of set up?

Lastly, I am a bit unsure as to what has changed in Win 8.1, but on Win 8 I had a public network and a private network showing in the network and sharing cenre, now I only have a private network set up...what would make this change?

Many thanks for any support and helping to try and teach an old dog new tricks!

It really won't help to enter the IP info into the IPv4 settings and it's best to let the router handle all that. DHCP reservation does just what it says.

The one router in bridged mode is about the only hang up I'm seeing here, using bridged connections can have the effect of cutting the potential bandwidth in half. Unless you have a really good reason for doing that?

Don't know if this will help but we see the issue you describe quite often and disabling (uncheck) "Automatically detect settings" in Internet options >connections > LAN settings along with either Google or OpenDNS as the server usually solves the delay.

Thanks for that - Not quite sure what you mean about the modem settings? The router I have has no ADSL port - the Billion modem is the connection to the internet, I don't understand how else it can be connected?

All of the instructions I have read tell me to put the Billion router into bridge mode so that it is basically an open port to the router / internet, then let the much more powerful Linksys EA6700 do all the work.

I appreciate your assistance, so please can you give me a bit more detail on how the connection would be better handled - like I say, this is all new to me so all input is helpful, Thanks!

Thanks,
I will give that a go - I have tried a few suggestions from the net, but up to now nothing has made much difference.
I was running IE 11 with Win 8.1, but it has become absolutely unusable - it just crashes randomly when certain widgets or pop ups are on a page - The screen goes bright red with millions of lines and the entire machine locks up and has to force reset - you cannot access task manager or anything, complete lock up.

I rarely use IE but I would suggest looking through your error logs to see if you might pick up on something. That sounds like it may be video related. Have you checked for updated video card drivers?

Bridge mode is correct on your adsl modem if you are using an alternate router. Also make sure the adsl modem is set to always on connection and is not connecting on every session.

No there is nothing in the error logs, the only thing that I can find everytime it crashes is some mention of Com Server -

I think that this is an error generated "after the fact" and the real error is something to do with the video card and video drivers- Gigabyte GTX460 1GB O/C - Nvidia 331.65 (these are the latest drivers and to be honest never seemed to work properly after the 310 issue - but it is a nightmare trying to revert to older drivers from Nvidia!)

Make of it what you will, but IE11 just drops like a ton of rubbish - sometimes Chrome goes into some sort of SPAS Mode but recovers - then you get the usual message...the nvidia driver has stopped working but has recovered...Win 8.1 I.E 11 never recovers - it dies a sad and miserable death!

I don't think your dcom errors have anything to do with it. If Chrome is stating the driver stopped working I think you are pretty sure that is the issue with the crashing.

How is your network delay issue progressing?

I am progressing with the network delay - I took out an account with DYDNS - now I have put that account where it belongs in the toilet along with all the trash from Tight VNC - everything is working better.

The crashing with the video doesn't happen to the same extent with Chrome as it does with IE11, IE11 just stops everything, the screen turns a red sort of shade and that is it - the only way out is to force a reboot using the reset switch on the PC, the Chrome issue is the Nvidia driver hanging, but at least it clears after a few seconds..the IE11 problem is a major restart!

Tomorrow I have TOT ( The Thai Telephony Brigade coming out - they are sending an engineer to see if I can get 13MBS.1024K ADSL2 - it is going to cost me a whopping 2 Euros a month to upgrade from 7MB- 13MB!!!

Glad it's getting better for you. I always found Firefox and Chrome much more graceful than IE when it experiences problems.

Glad your delays are getting better. Our DSL is capped at 6Mb/512Kb here. Seemed fast when we first got it, not so much now after adding cable with speeds up to 50Mb/5Mb :) We keep the DSL for backup since our cable provider isn't known for their dependability.

Good luck with your issues and keep an eye out for newer video drivers that may very well solve your issue.
