convert nas drive from FAT32 to NTFS

Hi,

Anyone know how to convert an old FAT32 NAS drive to NTFS without losing the data on it?

convert z: /fs:ntfs gives error message cannot convert network drive

As far as I know you can't. You can do an end run around on the drive. Create a system image of the drive and save it on another drive. Then format drive and convert it from FAT 32 to NTFS, then apply the image to the drive.

Yea. I guess without backing it up to another drive I could create a ntfs partition and move files across?

Expanding the ntfs as the fat32 shrinks.

The "convert" command requires low level access to the drive and that level of access just isn't available over a network.

If you do any resizing of partitions you need to have a full backup of the data on the drive. If anything goes wrong you could lose everything. Of course you should have such a backup anyway. Don't wait until it is too late.

I have copied all data onto my other NAS drive. It's just 200Gb backups of old pc c: drives over the past ten years, not live data.

I can format it now.
