Wierd networking problem

I am running a Sony Viao SVE171E13M laptop with Win 8.1 through a BT Infinity hub. The computer connects to the internet just fine when running through the desktop programmes such as Firefox, Steam and Windows Live Mail.

However none of the Metro apps work and Store states that I am not connected to the internet. In addition I can not set up a homenetwork, again apparently as I am not connected to the internet.

When I use my phone as a hotspot, these things work fine, but 3G is not great for more than a last resort.

I am running a BT infinity hub, through power line wireless extenders, but have tried through the hub only and Metro still doesn't seem to see the wireless network.

I am quite tech savvy, but not an ubergeek, any help would be greatly appreciated, and i should be able to follow simple advice.

I can use the computer but am not getting any benefit from Win8.

Thanks
Alex

So many reasons why this can happen, this is a weak point in Windows 8 for certain.

Thanks guys, I am just running DISM and ill see if it helps. I have tried the windows troubleshooters before with no luck. I'll try the links above and let you know how it goes.

Thanks for the responses guys, I wasn't able to look into it for a few weeks but I am still not able to access "store" or other metro apps.

I run a bunch of trouble shooters and the DISM mentioned above, but no luck.

Has anyone else come across this issue and how did they fix it?

You really need to run the sfc /scannow command first before the DISM command.

This will fix the system files and should help DISM complete it's task.

Thanks,
I have ran scannow in the past, but I will run it this time, then DISM and see what happens.

Right,
I ran scannow, then DISM then scannow again, restarting the laptop after each operation.

Still the same problems, i did get a CBS log from the second scannow, which stated that some corrupted files weren't fixed. Strangely the first run didn't mention the corrupted files.

I can attach the txt file or PM to someone who knows what he's/she's looking far.

Thanks for the help so far.

for info the error message when opening up the store is "We weren't able to connect to the Store. This might have happened because of a server problem or the network connection timed out. Please wait a few minutes and try again. (0x80072efd)
Cheers.

Run both scans again rebooting after, it sometimes takes 3 complete scans to fix these problems.

Until those scans come up clean there is no chance anything will be working right.

Apologies about this.

I have run scannow and DISM several times now, rebooting in between. I still can't get on the store, and home group states that I'm not connected to a network, and I can't select a network because apparently I am on public/guest settings. This is all very frustrating.

I don't want to restore the laptop and I can be bothered to find all the data again.
