I thought I had my sharing files figured out,but now I updated to windows 8.1 and cannot open the files I have marked "share with" on my windows 7 computer. I keep getting the box that tells me I don't have permission. I have read/write checked. How do I open them in windows 8.1. One computer has windows 7 the trouble one has windows 8.1.

Are you sure that the 8.1 machine is part of the same Homegroup?

You might try rejoining the original Homegroup by leaving then joining again, you can get the Homegroup password from the Windows 7 machine.

The "Share With" > "Specific People" setting on each Library folder needs to say Homegroup read/write.

This is so confusing. Yesterday everything worked just fine. Today not so. My sound is even gone. But in the sharing,It all shows connected to the home group and the 2 computers and all the files from the other computer, I just do not have permission to open them. I did yesterday. I have not done anything different today,no unusual downloads or anything.Should I still just cancel it all out and start over? And how do I get the sound back? I wish I had never updated to 8.1.

So you didn't install any type of third party anti virus software? If the grandson has access to this PC there is no telling what could have been changed.

The Sharing permissions are controlled through C: > Users folder > properties> Sharing tab

Press the Windows key, then start typing sharing. You'll be told no apps on sharing are available . . . click on Settings (over to the right top of the window. There will be all types of sharing tabs.

Yes, like in the picture below. I believe you are looking in the wrong place.

Yes, that is where I am looking. Is that not the right place? Also in that advanced sharing box,the name is workgroup and not homegroup. Is that a problem and if so how do I change it?

If those tabs aren't the same as mine then something is wrong because the ones I'm showing are the default settings for the Users folder. It would help if you could post a screen shot of the User folder.

About the only way for the Sharing tab to disappear is if someone unchecked the Sharing Wizard in Folder Options which is enabled by default per the picture below, just go to the Control Panel then Folder Options to check that the Sharing Wizard setting is enabled. :)

The built in snipping tool is good for that but the screen shots work fine for me also.

You only need to leave the Homegroup on all machines in the Homegroup in order to create a new one. Although if there is no sharing tab on the Users folder then you certainly have bigger problems than just the Homegroup.

Yes the snip didn't work, to upload a picture you need use the "Go Advanced" button. :)

You have the same problem as this other guy. > http://www.eightforums.com/network-sharing/33901-connecting-windows-8-1-windows-7-homegroup.html

This is called a corrupted User profile, pretty hopeless situation due to the upgrade with no obvious solution other than refresh or reset. This isn't something that can be easily fixed.

sharing

Just wanted to thank all who offered suggestions for homegroup sharing. I finally got it. Left homegroup on both computers and then started again. I did change the name of one computer. Don't know if that was the magic trick,or not,and then started the group up again and only used "everyone" for joining. For now, at least, it is all working. Thanks for hanging in there with me.

Sounds good to me, yes usually leaving and rejoining fixes Homegroup problems. You might have been using the same PC name on two machines which could have created the problem. Glad it's fixed.
