Hi,

I have an old WHS v1 server, with all my data/backup on.
This was working fine with Windows 8 and 8.1 Preview with MC installed.

However, when I did new install from Windows 8.1 Pro ISO, the WHS does not like the Computer anymore.
WHS Console icon always ask about password, and that it dont match. But they are the same ones.

So no I cant take backups of the W8.1 Pro computer anymore.

Have googled a lot, and seems like W8.1 changed some network transport layer security settings (NTLM) compared to earlier.
However even adding my old username and password in Credentials Manager didnt work.

I know its old old old and crappy. But still does the job quite nicely the WHS Server.

Please let me know if you have solved this issue.

//EDIT: Forgott to tell you I am using MS account, username@outlook.com for logging into W8.1.

Thanks!

Try to change your group policy settings as stated in the post below. This may resolve some incompatibility issues.

Hope This Helps,
Josh :)

Hi,

Yes, I have actually changed the first part of this (NTLM) settings. However I have not yet tried to disable 128 bits encryption, but that encryption is also stated in the WHS as well. So don't think it will help, but will try later on today.

My issue is not that I can't see WHS server in the Network part, because I can. Can even log on With creds if I manually type in Admin user name / password.
It's more that the layer communication is not working properly, and wish I knew what they changed between the OS'es from 8.0 to 8.1.

I am browsing WHS forums as well, because I can't be the only one With the issue :)

Hi,

After endles googling and searching through the Information Jungle I have come to a conclusion.
WHS v1 will not be able to backup my Windows 8.1 version due to UEFI/GPT.

Thats the reason why backups won't work!

I have shares and RDP, and that have to do for now.

However CHruchland, there is only an WHS2011 upgrade of $40 or so to get you going. WHS2011 has got a KB article and CAN backup/restore Windows 8.1 with UEFI/GPT.

I have made a decission to move on, with HP MicroServer G7 N54l or G8 series, and Server 2012 Essentials. Since there is NONE of the NAS that will let you take bare-metal backup/restore of clients seamlessly as WHS / Essentials.

Thanks for doing the legwork on trying to find a solution. Leave it to MS to abandon something that is simple and works so well.

I'm going to sit tight for awhile. I read a possible replacement would be to get WHS2011 and DriveBender. Would this work as well as WHS v1? Pros and cons?

TIA

No problem. Really wanted this to work my self, but better just realise that MS won't do anything about it for WHS v1.
There 2-3 good extensions to WHS2011 that will give you DE capabilities, some are free and some costs.

I have never tried them so can't really give you any pros & cons about it. Sorry about that.

But after what people say, it will at least solve your issue with Windows 8/8.1 backup/restore. Also they will stop selling WHS2011 at December 31st, so better decide before that. However they have said to support it until 2025 I think. But please don't quote me on that last part.

Good luck with your choice.
