Wireless connect problems

Hi there, I am new to these forums, anyway time for my problem..

I have a PCE-N15 wireless adapter in my computer and I seem to be having some connection problem with it. One minute I can be connected with great internet speeds and not a problem in the world and the next it just dies on me, when it dies that is it gone for ages while I try to figure out what is wrong.. Then suddenly it can start up again and work like a dime.

So heres the thing, I don't know the main cause other than some DNS error (I have been trying to get the error again so I can give you all full details) but anyway I am connected fine now, but running speed tests I am getting 0.5-1mb/s speeds...

I know its not my router/isp as I can connect perfectly fine on my laptop and so can my brother in the next room.

I guess its some setting that needs to be changed but anything would be great help, thanks.

Edit: Just got this error "ERR_NETWORK_CHANGED"

Edit: Just used the troubleshooter and this is the image I got: http://broncincity.com/i/4a27dc8fbbceee9075b6.png however I am still having problem and spent the last 10 minutes loading google....

Welcome to Eight Forums!

Is your Wi-Fi adapter's driver up to date?

How far is your computer to the router?
Also, can you provide us a snip of Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector for us to review for any wireless channels interference?

Another thing, is it possible for you to test a wired connection and see if you can replicate the issue?

Yes, my Wi-Fi adapters is up-to-date (going through Device Manager and on the companies website)

My computer is only about 5 meters away at the very most, so I don't think that should be the problem.

I will doing load it now and get back to you in a moment.

Wired seems to working fine, I have tested it for a while and the issue doesn't seem to happen, I would just used wired connect but I don't have a long enough cable, so I had to move my computer to test it for a few hours.

I had connection issues all day yesterday, but today (touch wood) all seem to be fine so far.

Thanks again.

Until 2x comes back, at the very least you will want to try using a different channel on the router because all three wireless broadcasts in your area are using the same channel 1. Channel 6 or 11 would be a better choice for you.

There are also reports of this wireless NIC Asus PCE-N15 randomly dropping signals with certain routers according to the reviews at Amazon.

I just realised I hadn't updated the drivers so I done that, not breaking up as bad but still a little bit, I know they have had a few reviews about signal dropping however my brother has the same card and I have borrowed it and I am still having the same problems and he can use mine fine, so I'm not sure :/

You could try uninstalling the Asus drivers and let Windows install it's own version.

Sorry for the late reply, I was gone for the weekend. If wired connection is working fine it could be your wireless adapter might be faulty. Please let us know if the new Wi-Fi adapter works.
Wired seems to working fine, I have tested it for a while and the issue doesn't seem to happen, I would just used wired connect but I don't have a long enough cable, so I had to move my computer to test it for a few hours.
Just curious to know if you've tried connecting to another wireless networks (open or secured). There are Wi-Fi adapters that are not too compatible with routers. Others would change the wireless security (WEP, WPA or WPA2) and test it out if you can get a stable connection. WPA2 with AES encryption is highly recommended though... :)

Thanks for the reply, I have tried using WEP, WPA and WPA2, all with the same problem, I will try and connect to a open network now, could it be a problem with anything to do with DNS? I don't know much about DNS so I haven't tried anything.

Thanks again!

I don't think that it has something to do with DNS. I've had wireless issue 6 mos ago using a Netgear dual band router, I've updated my Wi-Fi adapter's driver and router's firmware to the latest and didn't help. I moved to a new place with the same ISP (Charter) however a different router (Buffalo dual band) and my issue has been resolved. I'm not suggesting for you to replace your router, but I have a feeling that your Wi-Fi adapter isn't compatible with your router. Try a different Wi-Fi adapter and see if it helps, if not return it. :D

See I would agree with you about the router and adapter not being compatible with each other, but my brother in the next room has exactly the same adapter and he has no problems at all..

I will give his another try and let him use mine, see if the problems switch and then I can be 100% sure it is the adapter itself

Does he have the same computer as yours too?

Small appliances and electronic devices can also cause interference. Try assigning Static IPs in your WLAN settings see if it helps.

Also, it won't hurt for you to scan your computer for possible infections, you may download either Free Malwarebytes or SuperAntiApyware. There's no need for you to post the logs.

Our computers are similar but not the same, anyway, it is only about a month old so doubt about infections/viruses, but I will scan anyway..

Also, if I was to buy a new adapted what would you recommend? (I might buy a new one if I can't get it fixed)

From the Amazon web site.
Talk about EASY. Knowing the device was due today, I went to Realtek.com yesterday and downloaded driver RTL8192CE-VA4. When I received the device, I installed it and Windows 7 did the rest. PnP set it up, attached it to the pre-installed driver and all I had to do was click connect and enter my wireless pass key. I was up and running and never used the CD-ROM for anything.

I can't imagine why some reviewers said they had such a hard time getting it to work. Obviously the device is working properly as I am using it to connect to Amazon and write this review. The only time I really spent was in disconnecting and moving the computer to do the install and putting it back in place after I was done. I would buy this unit again in a heartbeat. Asus remains a very good choice for add-ons.

For the Realtek driver version RTL8192CE-VA4, you just need to pick a download server in the US > Realtek

Notice the Realtek driver for Windows 8 dated 2013/5/30, this is a different driver than the Asus version and doesn't have the software utility which can be problematic. This at least gives you a different driver version to try which is directly from Realtek. You will first want to uninstall the Asus drivers and the software utility "if there is one". :)

Page at Amazon where this reply came from. > Amazon.com: Customer Reviews: ASUS(PCE-N15) maximum performance Wireless-N Network Adapter ( 300Mbps Transmit / 300Mbps Receive) with PCI-E interface, Include Full Height and Low Profile bracket, WPS button Support

This problem is getting worse and worse and I don't know what the cause of it is, I have moved my computer closer to my router with no luck, tried different network adapter, again with no luck and I don't want to spend money on a new adapter to find out that isn't the problem.

I am lucky if I can stay connected for 5 minutes tops, and any time that I do a speedtest I am lucky if I get 3Mbs..

Just to follow up, have you done the scans?

It won't hurt changing the Wireless Mode (N, G/N or G) if you can do this from your Wi-Fi adapter first, then from the router.
One minute I can be connected with great internet speeds and not a problem in the world and the next it just dies on me, when it dies that is it gone for ages while I try to figure out what is wrong.. Then suddenly it can start up again and work like a dime.
Regarding the Wi-Fi adapter, check out this one and make sure that there's a driver for your O/S, if it doesn't work of course you may get an RMA and return it back. Feel free to go to a local electronic store nearby if you wish or if that's a lot more convenient for you.

Please give us another update.

Done done scans using the programs you told me, also I ran avast scan and none of them found anything.

How do I change the wireless mode? (For my adapter and router)

I was thinking about going to PC World (my local store) and purchasing this just to see how it work, I have 4/5 bars of signal strength all the time however so I don't think strength is the problem, faulty card maybe?

PS. What is RMA?

Thanks again for all your help :)

It's a driver problem which has been widely reported at the review section in Amazon, this problem only seems to occur with certain chipsets, That is why it works on one machine and not the other.

You might be surprised what you can find out by reading those reviews. There is nothing wrong with the adaptor.

The Asus driver is problematic for many people so I suggest you install the Realtek driver which works better for most people.

You see the adaptor is actually made by Realtek and marketed by Asus. I'm really wondering how the heck RMA can work when you have already tested this device on another machine and it worked?

For the Realtek driver version RTL8192CE-VA4, you just need to pick a download server in the US, you want the Windows 8 version> Realtek
