Hi.

I live in an apt building that has freeWIFI.
There are about 4 wifi connections Ican switch to when one is lagging.
I would like to see the number of usersaccessing each connections.

Is there any freeware system monitoring tool available that will show me #number of users on each
wifi connected in my building. I am running Win 8.

Thanks.
TC.

The only way to see who is connected to which wifi is if you can connect and login to the router for each wifi network and it lists the IP addresses that have been allocated to each device.

Simple answer, No... not from a machine. You would need router access as stated above.

You could do some rough estimations by looking at the IPconfig and see roughly how many users are connected based on what IP address you obtained. Though you wouldn't be able to find out where the DHCP scope began and therefore could cause you to be as much as 50 users out...

Please understand that the amount of users isn't the only factor in causing a slow connection. It depends on how much bandwidth a particular user is using as well. For example an access point with less users may still be lagging because one users is playing online games.

This is what I use to monitor my wifi SoftPerfect WiFi Guard : keep your WiFi network secure just install it and do a qucik scan, will show mac address of router and current users. FYI, you'll have to connect to the access point first before scanning to see how many users are currently active.

Key features

  • Pings computers and other network devices and displays those alive.
  • Detects firewalled computers that do not respond to ping.
  • Scans your network at a specified interval.
  • Immediately alerts you if an unknown device is found.
  • Runs on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.
  • Absolutely free, has a portable edition, and does not contain any adware, spyware or malware.

Some WLAN routers have the feature / switch: "WLAN users can't connect with one another". Then the "WiFi Guard" don't show other WLAN users. I have tested this.

In an apt building that has freeWIFI I would enable this feature. So no virus infected WLAN user could infect an other WLAN user.

Hmm, then maybe wireshark would work. Have you tried WS against this kind of router?

I don't think wireshark would be accurate enough to show active WiFi users. Plus if there was a switch that involved then the broadcasts would be picked up by the wireless connection.

Just tested it:
  • Switched the router to "WLAN users can't connect with one another": Wireshark can't see the other WLAN users

Interesting. Can you tell me what brand / model of router you're testing? Do you know what this function is called?
