Solved Windows 8 Laptop having issues connecting to WiFi

Hey guys,

I hope you can help me. My Windows 8 laptop is having some WiFi connection issues.

Basically what happens is that every 5-20 minutes I cannot access the internet on browsers and the wifi connection is listed as "Limited".

The laptop: ASUS Vivobook S200E

The WiFi: Sky wireless router (no idea about model, it's almost two years old) But what I will say is that my Windows 7 laptop never skips a beat on this network, nor does my wife's Mac, nor do our 2 Android tablets, the iPad, the iPhone, the Android phone, and various devices that our friends connect when they come round. Literally no other device has any problems on this network, so I know (by the process of elimination) the Win8 laptop is the one with the problem.

In order to fix the issue I have to disconnect from the network, wait about 30 sec and reconnect again. The monotonous regularity that I have to do this is getting really dull, as you can imagine.

Any insight into this, ladies and gents?

Cheers

You might first try unchecking the power saving feature which can cause problems such as you are describing.

It's also important to use the correct security and encryption for Widows 8 drivers, you should be using WPA-2 with AES encryption.

This setting is located in the Device Manager, right click the adaptors NIC then choose properties then the power management tab per the picture below.

The latest WiFi drivers from Asus might also work better if you don't already have them.

Thanks chev, that's a great description and screenshot.

Wouldn't you know it; my power settings were such that it DID allow the device to be turned off to save power.

I've unchecked the box and hopefully this should sort things out :)

Thanks again.

Regarding "using WPA-2 with AES encryption" - I have no idea how to check whether this is the case.

Yes hopefully it was just the power saving feature turning it off which is common.

The Security and the encryption are basically set up on the router or access points settings though it is possible to designate or match those same settings when you set up the wireless profile for the connection.

Please mark this thread as solved since both problems are now fixed. :)

Hi guys.

Me again. It's exactly this same laptop, the fix that chev suggested did work, but now the main issue is that the internet/wifi on this computer works perfectly - but only as long as it is plugged in. The moment I am running on battery only, the internet goes south...

Have been messing around with the power settings to see if I could find the cause, but no success... :/

any help appreciated

Vlad

Try : Control Panel (view as icons) > Power Options > Change plan settings (of your current plan or the one used when on battery) > Change advanced power settings > Wireless Adapter Settings > Power Saving Mode > Choose Maximum Performance

If it uses too much battery you can try low/medium power savings instead.

OH MY WORD!

That appears to have solved it. It was previously on "maximum power savings" or some such nonsense.

Thank you so much. I'm kind of red faced now - cannot believe that I wasn't able to find this on my own.

Thanks again.

I reccomend to all windows 8 users that have issues on WIFI connections to BUY a mini-USB Wifi Adapter (it's the size of a thumb).

I could not surf the web until I bought this little device for just 3 euros, in the top chinese web (starting with A letter).
