Windows 8 cannot access GoFlex external HD on my networkCo

My Home Computer (HC) has Windows 8 as the OS. It is wired to an Asus RT-AC66U wireless router. The router is directly wired to an Asus RT-N66U wireless router converted to an access point. My GoFlex HDD is connected directly to the Access Point (RT-N66U).
From my HC, I can open the RT-N66U, and look at the network map, and see the GoFlex listed and the network address, XXX.XXX.X.XXX. If I go to run on the HC, and type\\XXX.XXX.X.XXX, it says Windows can't communicate with the device. The Home Computer shows nothing under Network. If I look at "Computer" I can see all the HDD plus GoFlexHome:UPNP and even open the external HDD. But I cannot copy or move files from my computer to the GoFlex external HDD.

I called Seagate Tech Support who said the GoFlex had to show under Network for me to use it.

My wireless laptop(WL) is connected to my network. The GoFlex HDD is under network as is my HC. I can use the GoFlex drive normally and transfer folders or files back and forth. The WL also shows my HC under network, but when I try to access the HC, "Windows cannot communicate with the device"

Both computers are joined to the same workgroup. Under Network and Sharing Center the WLactive network is the name of my wireless network, and is joined under Homegroup. My HC under active network states Network 2, joined under homegroup. The connections are Wireless for the WL and Ethernet for the HC.

Any help to get my HC on the proper network or settings is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Also , have you asked in the SmallNetBuilder forums , most of the support for the RT-N66U (including network attached drive issues) have been addressed there...

I'm afraid I don't know a lot about networking but I do have a GoFlex HDD, so thought I'd add my observations in case they help you or someone who knows their network stuff...

  1. For my GoFlex, it shows up on my Computer as :
    • some sort of uPnP service (eg. in Windows Media Player) as well as
    • shared folders under Network using \\XXX.XXX.X.XXX
I think the uPnP thing is like "Play To" functionality - probably good for listening to music but not so good for storing files. The uPnP thing seems to show up on the computer even when I've not entered my password for the GoFlex.

  2. If I look at My Computer when I first switch it on, the GoFlex doesn't initially show up in Network, but when I type in \\XXX.XXX.X.XXX, I get a password entry box, and once it's been entered, I can see it within Network.

  3. What happens if you go to the browser and type in the GoFlex's web address?
    Code:
    http://XXX.XXX.X.XXX/
(With the slashes as \\ rather than //) It would be interesting to know if your HC can see the Goflex's web pages for settings etc.

  4. I notice that my GoFlex has a "workgroup name" setting; however my laptops have different Workgroup and can still see it, so this doesn't seem to stop me using it. I've not set up a Homegroup either.

  5. This laptop has "network discovery and file sharing" turned off, but despite this, it can still see the GoFlex.

Did you install the dashboard software for the GoFlex drive?

You could try installing without the dashboard software per the link below.
GoFlex Home - Installing Without Dashboard

More info here about Windows 8 support which requires an update.
Re: Windows 8 - Roadmap - Seagate Community Forums

Will my Seagate drive work with Windows 8?
Just in case this helps... the method which thira has already tried (using the IP address \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) works on my W8 laptops without my bothering to install any Seagate software whatsoever on the laptop. I have a Seagate GoFlex Home, which is plugged into my Wireless router.

The fact that using the IP address doesn't work for thira makes me think there's an issue not related the Seagate software.

Edit: just a thought - what Firewall or other anti-malware software are you running on the problem computer?

I think I posted some valid links to assist in solving this problem, one shows an update for Windows 8 systems, although I do believe they stand on their own merit and were intended to help the Op.
