Solved Can't connect to Windows 8 shares with Windows 7

I am attempting to setup shares on a Windows 8 64-bit machine with restricted access. I have a Windows Live account for my machine and am currently logged in to that account. I also created a local account that I granted admin privileges to. Initially when I mapped my network drives from a Win 7 machine to the Win 8 machine I could access the shares but I couldn't write to them. Things have gone south since as I tried all kinds of tweaking to get the Win 8 to allow me to write to the shares. I click on Advanced sharing and allowed Everyone access. I can't log in as the Win 8 (Windows Live) user -- the machine keeps telling me that my password is wrong -- and I can't seem to log in as the local account either. Please help -- I'm thinking of reverting this machine back to WIndows 7 -- so far can't stand this new OS...

Where was this share located? A network share should not affect your user account unless you explicitly restricted yourself from it

You should be able to reset your password online - http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/12206-microsoft-account-password-change-reset-windows-8-a.html

Thanks for responding Josh.

I've created the shares on the Windows 8 machine. In frustration I resorted to using the homegroups -- which suck. I can now access folders and write to them, but so can everyone else on my network. I want to restrict view and / or write access to certain folders, but Windows 8 won't let me log in as a user on the Windows 8 machine from the Windows 7 and I can't seem to restrict write access to the Windows 7 users because the Windows 8 share dialog doesn't seem to have knowledge of users on any machine but the Windows 8 machine. The damn homegroups seem fine for sharing files, but are useless for restricting access on a granular level.

Sorry to respond to myself but I just read my response and want to clarify -- I am attempting to access a Windows 8 share from
a Windows 7 machine . What I'd like to do is map the Windows 8 share on the Win 7 machine and login as a different user, preferably the Windows 8 user. However when I do this the machine tells me I cannot access the drive even though the user I am logging in as is the owner of the share.

If you want to apply peer to peer user account administration on a file share you need to use a local account and password and apply it to the share permissions. To reflect this on multiple machines you need to ensure that the very same username and password is created on the other machines in order to access the share.

For example - If I wanted to create a share where only the - User = Josh Password = Pa55word - then I would need to create that username and password on all the remote machines that wish to access that share. This is how peer to peer folder sharing works.

The other option would be to create a homegroup with restrictions based on what machine accesses that homegroup however it would not offer user based filtering.
