Solved Laptop wireless problem

Hello!

I have recently bought a new laptop (Asus K56C) and installed Windows 8 and also all the necessary drivers.

But when I try to connect via wireless to my router I keep getting this message instantly (as if it doesn't even try to connect): "Can't connect to this network". The weird thing is that I can see all the wireless connections around me, including my router, but I cannot connect to it. The only way I can use the internet is by connecting the router to my laptop via an Ethernet cable.

So far I have opened the "Network troubleshooter" and try to detect problems, but I couldn't find the problem this way. I have also went into the "Device Manager" and uninstalled the driver for the "Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 Wireless Network Adapter" and then installed the latest version of it.

If this is relevant whatsoever, please note that my phone can connect to my router without any problems.

I have also attached some images showing how my Huawei HG655B router is configured (perhaps there's something wrong there?), and how Network Adapters look like in "Device Manager" (is something missing there?), and lastly how the failed to connect message looks like in Windows 8.

If you want me to provide a logcat or something similar, I will do it provided that you can tell me how to do it (because I don't know all that much when it comes networks and wireless connections).

Your opinions and suggestions are gladly appreciated.

How did you do the new win 8 install? Did you leave the existing partition structure in place or did you wipe it clean and let Win 8 rebuild the correct partition structure? If you left the existing in place, a screenshot of your disk mgmt view might be helpful.

There were initially two partitions. The primary one had 13 gigs and the other one 487 gigs. I wiped them both clean and because I couldn't install windows 8 on the primary partition, I had to merge them. I did that and ended up with only one partition, the C drive. After this I had to resize the C drive so I shank it to 100 gigs, and the rest of 400 gigs went to a new drive, drive E. I have also attached a photo of my Disk Management.

Ps: Regarding the wireless issue, I have also disabled the encryption and tried to connect, but the exact same thing happened as I mentioned in my first post.

I'm hoping one of our partition experts will come along and examine your structure. Let me ask you one more question please. So, when you were doing your last install, did the installation process ever hang during a reboot and you were forced to manually shut down and restart?

I used a bootable usb thumb drive to install Windows. After the installation the laptop restarted and it booted again from the usb and I ended up at the first installation screen again. So I manually restarted the laptop, ejected my thumb drive and continued the configuration of Windows 8.

But it seems like my windows is running pretty fast and I had no errors so far... apart from the wireless connection (if it's even an error).

Did I make a mistake in the way I have manually restarted my laptop at that point?

I don't want to throw you off track. When the installation process encounters a partition structure that it can't handle for some reason, it will not reboot without intervention. This will happen 3 to 4 times during the installation process and the incompatibility usually results in the restart and shutdown processes not working after the install. So, if that is not happening to you, I think you are OK but I would just like one of our partiton gurus to confirm your structure is OK. However, if you run out of ideas, as a last resort, you could try a clean install and delete all existing partitions during the process. At one point, your disk should show 100% unallocated. At that point, simply clcik NEXT and let the installation finish. BTW, I see nothing wrong in the images provided but maybe someone else might have some ideas. Good luck.

Thanks! Today I went out to visit some places and so far I have connected to an unencrypted wireless network that was in my Town Hall. It connected pretty fast and it worked fine. In fact right now I am writing from my laptop that's connected to this network. So this rules out a hardware problem, since my wireless adapter is clearly working.

Later on today I will go to a restaurant and try and connect there to an encrypted wireless connection. See if it works that way.

I guess it's also not a Windows 8 problem, but I could be wrong. Any thoughts on the matter?

Well, that sounds like good news. So, when you get a chance, why don't you provide a short recap of "what works and what doesn't" after you have completed your subsequent testing. Good luck and let us know.

Ok, a short recap of the things I have tried:

1. I have tried to connect to my router using WPS and I always get this message "Windows can't get setting automatically. Enter the security key instead". I enter the security key and instantly get this message "Can't connect to this network". I have also tried to set encryption to TKIP instead of AES and ended up getting the same "can't connect" message.

2. I tried disabling the encryption altogether, and I was still couldn't connect.

3. Tried troubleshooting to detect problems, updating my Network Driver "
Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 Wireless Network Adapter", uninstalling the driver and then install the latest version of it from Asus's website... but still no luck.

4. I have also tried to disable WLAN filtering, because I was using MAC Address filtering on my router - still no luck.

What intrigues me is that while I was out to quite a few places, I managed to connect to 4 different wireless hotspots, but all of these were not password protected and I don't know if they were encrypted or not. Although I still don't know if I can rule out a hardware problem (perhaps my laptop can't connect properly to an encrypted network and password protected) or a software problem regarding Windows 8 or either my network drivers.

I think the only way I can find out is by connecting to a different, encrypted and password protected network, but so far I couldn't find one. I think though that in a couple of days I'll be visiting a friend and try to connect to his wireless network.

What do you guys think? Is my reasoning accurate, am I missing something?

You thought and ideas are much appreciated!

Have you tried other devices to connect to your network wirelessly? This will offer a better indication as to whether it is your laptop or the router

Possibly borrow a friend or relatives laptop and try to connect?

Do you have any other wireless devices that can connect OK and are currently working through your router?

My phone is always connected to my router wirelessly. And it connects pretty quick too.

I never setup a wireless phone but are there any similarities in the connection properties between your phone and your laptop? Is it possible to compare that information? Also, what is the make/model number of your router?

Also, maybe you can eduacte me a bit more on why you have to connect your wireless phone to your own wireless router? All my phones do not require that type of connection. Is this a Skye service or something similar?

If that fails to work then I would advise resetting your router to factory settings and see if that resolves any issues

I think he means a mobile phone for example an iPhone or smartphone

Josh :)

OK, we now have two different forum members trying to assist but sending you in two different directions so I am going to yield to Shadowjk and let him work with you "one-on-one." Good luck.

No... that's OK... really. Give your methods a go and see if you can help the OP. I'm perfectly OK with your intervention. You may have some better ideas because I was going to take the slow and steady approach (eg, collect every possible detail) and if you can "cut to the quick" and get him working faster then that's what its all about.

To be honest I don't know know... and I also don't know much about wireless networks in general. Though I know for sure that both my phone and my laptop recognise b/g/n wireless standards, encryptions such as WEP, WPA, WPA2, PSK, and also both can connect using WPS.

My router is a HUAWEI, model HG655B.
