Solved Help - WiFi cuts out every few minutes

Hello. I recently bought a new desktop PC. I've had it a few weeks and for some reason I've recently been having trouble with the wireless.
I can verify that the problem is with the computer, as my old laptop, my phone, and other devices all seem to be doing fine and don't experience the same problem.
As the title says, every few minutes, the WiFi stops. It doesn't go completely, it simply changes to the picture with the asterisk (*) in the bottom right. This happens for only a couple of seconds before it goes back to normal. Then, it will happen again after a few minutes. This is completely infuriating when trying to watch videos online.

Sometimes when I use the troubleshooter it finds a problem with the WiFi adapter and resets it, and then says the issue is fixed.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

These types of intermittent wireless connection problems can be very difficult to track down as there are many possible causes.

Have you tried using a wired connection to get all the latest updates from the Windows Update Center?

They often have newer drivers there for your system that may help with this problem. It may also help to visit the HP support site to see if there are any driver updates for your new system.

Uninstalling any type of preinstalled trial versions of anti virus software may also help or other preinstalled bloatware can go a long way towards fixing these types of problems.

Thanks. I found this thread and did as the OP did: http://www.eightforums.com/network-sharing/21748-default-gateway-not-available.html

Like his/her's, I get the message that the default gateway can't be found - something along those lines, anyway.

The internet cut out again just a second ago though, so I don't think it's fixed (I thought it was, that's why I marked as solved).

I'm not going to be able to connect using a wired connection, as the only connection point is in the study downstairs and I'm using my computer in my bedroom upstairs, which is quite a way from the study.

I'm set to automatically install updates from windows, so no problem there. I'm trying to work out how to find HP drivers and things but would that be a problem when the computer is so new?

I have Norton 360 installed but removed all antivirus that came with the computer before I installed it.

No problems there. What kind of signal strength are you showing for this connection?

Are you using WPA2 security and AES encryption for this connection?

Is there any type of anti virus software installed on this machine? The trial versions they come with cause endless problems.

It's always three or four bars signal strength, until it cuts out.
Yes and yes. :)
Norton 360 is installed - I removed any trial stuff that came with the computer (which was only Norton Internet Security). I just turned off Norton 360 to check it and it cut out a few minutes after, so I don't think that's causing the problem.

Sorry to be so troublesome. :(

About all I can see that might be causing this problem is what's left over from the original Norton trial version. You should try using the Norton removal tool for this. No trouble at all really, this is standard procedure in cases like this. :)

Hello! I'm back. I think I might have worked out what the problem is. Probably not though.
Basically, in the sidebar that comes up when you click the wifi icon in the corner, the one that shows the available wifi connections;
Sometimes there's just our home wifi, sometimes there are some BTWifi and BTFon networks, which I don't think are a problem

But other times there are networks that are from the houses around me, and looking at them, they always have the 'Connect automatically' button ticked?

But because they are a weak signal and therefore come and go every few minutes, even if I untick the box it appears again ticked in a few minutes.

How do I get my PC to stop trying to connect to them?

Edit: It's not even because they're disappearing, actually. There are two signals from neighbours houses. If I click on one and untick the box, then go to the next one and untick it, and then return to the previous one, it's ticked again? D:

You should be able to right click those and choose "forget this network". Usually the problem is that the auto connect won't stay checked.
