slow WiFi Speed

Hey,

my wifi seems very slow under Windows 8 and is acting like its been "capped" by something.

When running Windows 7, I was getting approx 60MB actually download rate off of my apparent 120MB Virgin Media service, now that I am on Windows 8 it appears to be running at 20MB.

The drivers have been updated to the one that was on the manufacturers website, before the update was applied my download was capped at 1MB.

Does something need changing / tweaking on Windows 8 to make it more friendly to high speed broadband?

Cheers

How are you measuring your speed?

Speedtest.net?

What antivirus program are you running?

First check PING to the AP and see if the slowdown is there.

Hi,

Measuring the speed using both speedtest.net and BT's own speed checking website

What do you mean by AP?

AP, access point or rooter you are connecting to, that will give you the timing to the rooter to see if the lag is on that side, if that one's short it would mean the problem is on the other side of it. You can also do a tracert to a known address and see exactly where the slowest point is.

that sounds pretty cool - can I ask how I would do about doing that?

In the command prompt as administrator, you punch in "tracert www.google.com" for instance (without the quotes of course) and it will give you IPs of every node on the way to Google server. together with ping time with it's maximum, minimum and average for every jump.
To run a ping measurement, You run "ping" command and following it an IP address to measure it to. For instance this is the ping between My computer and my rooter : ping 192.168.1.20
