Buffering Issues with ASUS RT-N66U

I own a ASUS RT-N66U and I have consistent buffering issues (pretty major one at that) and this has gotten worst over time. I can't stream a single 30 minute video without the connection buffering 3-4 times and I'm talking about 30-60 seconds a pop. It's rather annoying. I am also running the latest firmware with my router.
I have one PC in which my router is connected too. I also have the following devices on my network.

Apple TV x2
iPad
iPhone x3
IPod

Has anyone else had this problem? Any help would be appreciated.
Thank y

Are all these devices connected wirelessly. If so, that might be the problem, a bandwidth limitation of some sort...eg too many devices sharing the connection will show some lag. In your case the lag shows up while streaming. What is your ISP's connection speed? You might want to see if you can increase it, if at all possible.

All if the devices are connected wirelessly except 1 of the Apple TV's and the PC that the router is linked to.

My ISP speed is 5 upload and 35 download. It's the fastest that my ISP offers and they are the only ISP that services the small town that I live in.

If you disconnect all the other devices from your router (wired, wireless) does it improve?

When you say " the PC that the router is linked to" are you talking about modem - pc - router or modem - router - pc?

I mean that the PC is hard wired to the router. I never tried disconnecting any if the devices because I have always felt that since my connection was so fast that buffering should never be a issue.
I actually just watch a hour long show without any buffering at all. It seems to come and go at will. With that said, I don't know if it is the router or if it's my ISP that is spotty.

I'm running the same router as an A/P for my garage machine which is using the Asus PCE-AC66 dual band PCI-E adaptor, running the 5Ghz band at 80Mhz bandwidth getting 1.1Gbps very stable.

Apparently the connection stability between some standard 2.4Ghz devices is not good using the AC66U, even when using the latest Asus firmware.

There is Tomato and DD-WRT firmware's for this router and there is also the Merlin firmware which is supposed to be much more stable than the Asus firmware. One of those firmware's should be stable for you, I'll post a link to the Merlin firmware which I've heard was stable.

Damn fine idea...wouldn't mind doing that myself. Except if your garage is anything like mine, it's a sweat box...how do you keep it cool in the garage?

I live 1/2 mile from the beach with an endless stream of cool air coming off the ocean it never really gets hot here. It does get into the 80's during summer but I have a big fan in there. :)

Here is the wireless speed I get 35 feet from the AC66U which is mounted outside my house under the eves.

Yet stable firmware remains a problem with this router on the 2.4Ghz band but only with certain 2.4Ghz clients, the Merlin firmware is supposed to make it stable at 2.4Ghz. I personally have no stability problems using the Asus firmware version: 3.0.0.4.354 as I'm using the 5Ghz band

Would you guys suggest that I stick with just a single band? I utilize both bands. Could that be contributing to my problem?

It's not the band specifically it's just that certain 2.4Ghz clients are having problems maintaining a reliable connection with this new router.

I spent quite a bit of time researching all this and it seems the only way to stabilize the 2.4Ghz frequency with "all" 2.4Ghz clients is to go with the Merlin firmware. It's supposed to be very simple to install this firmware but I haven't have the need to try it myself.

So far the Merlin's firmware seems to be working better than the native firmware. Thank you for the recommendation.

That's good because I read this in quite a few different places. :)

Since I'm using my AC66U as an access point and I'm sending the signal to a PCE AC66 which is made to work with the newer 802.11ac standard so no problems between these two devices.

Feel free to mark this thread as solved. :)

I wish I could mark this thread as solved but the buffering issues have started again so I'm thinking now that the firmware wasn't the culprit after all.
I have heard that if the temperature of a router gets too high then that can affect its overall performance. My router gets really hot By the way. This is something that I'm looking into now. This is supposedly one of the best routers on the market. I'm actually surprised that I'm even dealing with this slowdown/buffering issue especially considering what the router cost me.

Upgrading the firmware was about the only option I saw here and many have reported that the Merlin firmware works the best.

If you are still having problems with your Asus AC66U then you should exchange it for another one. :)

Ok, I downloaded a WifI-Analyzer app for my iPad and it turns out that I have 11 items usually on the same network simultaneously.
Could this be the issue? My router is pretty good so I'm assuming that it can handle all of the traffic on my network. If not is there anything I could do from a hardware standpoint that would increase the performance?
I am also using the fastest service that my ISP provides.

Would a better router antennae help at all?
How do I go about manually switching a application to utilize the 5GHz pipeline? I would like both of my Apple TV's to use the 5GHz oppose to the 2GHz since the 5GHz is wider/faster. Or does this happen automatically?

5Ghz only works when there is a clear path to the router, no walls in the way etc. it's best to use the 5Ghz frequency to cover large open spaces or large rooms. You would also require either a USB or PCI-e NIC that can handle the 5Ghz frequency because hardly anything comes with it. The traffic of 11 clients shouldn't present any problems at all.

The 2.4Ghz frequency is the one to use for going through walls.

One more question. I have a wireless headset that I used for gaming (Logitech G930) which uses the same 2.4GHz technology. Might that be causing any interference at all? The Headset receiver is about 30" away from my router on the same desk.

Yes it could be causing problems just like the 2.4Ghz phones being in proximity of the router can cause connection problems.

You might try using Xirrus WiFi inspector or insider WiFi scanner to check the signals in your area and make a channel change on the wireless radio if required.
