Choppy Video over Home Network.

I have a very fast internet connection and video plays fine on all media players on my machine with local video files and internet video but when I try to play video files from a storage drive on a shared Windows 7 machine on my home network the video will play fine for a few minutes then buffer some, then play choppy. It is very intermittent. Also when I open the Homegroup and click on a shared computer (I have several on my Home Network) it will give me an error message saying that the share is not available or cannot be found but if I wait approximately 30-45 seconds and try it again it will usually open the share. I have seen a lot of posts concerning Networking issues in Win 8, is there no fix because from all I have read it seems to be hit and miss. I really would like to get this issue resolved as this throws a monkey wrench in my plans for a HTPC.

Thanks in advance.

Many things can cause the issues you are experiencing, allow me to suggest a couple of possiblilities, and other members may have additional suggestions as well..

First, are you on a wired network?

Is it 100 mb/s or gigabit (1000 mb/s), network card and router/modem must be gigabit to attain a faster connection than the 100 mb/s legacy connections.

If you are wireless, it should be wireless N or better to attain a faster connection than the 100 mb/s legacy net card.

Are the files larger than 4GB in size?

Your host computer with the media may be burdened running antivirus scan or other maintenance when you are trying to view a movie.

As for your intermittent delay in network availability, that may be caused by the host computer being asleep or the harddrive may have spun down or powered off by whatever power plan you have running on the computer you are trying to access.

Thanks for the reply but none of the above apply. I am on a wireless network with a fast connection and with my previous laptop which had Win XP Pro my video was flawless over the network. The only thing that has changed is the computer and operating system. I have the power scheme set on the laptop so that nothing goes to sleep or is powered off, and my share is supposedly set up correctly. I click on the external drive on the shared computer running Win 7 and I get the pop up saying it is not available or no longer there . I wait 30-45 seconds and try again and it will connect. I choose the movie I want to watch, it plays fine for a few minutes then it will start to stutter, play choppy for a few seconds then straighten out. Very intermittent. Again, I have seen this issue in a lot of forums. Just no definite fix that I have found. This is very annoying.

Already tried all that I am using the all-in-one that is provided by AT&T U-Verse. I know it's not the network, it's Win 8, all was working fine before Win 8.

I have the same problem before. I disabled all my wireless adapters and switched to gigabit powerline adapters for all my networked device. I am running windows 8 HTPC on my living room and streams video files from external harddrives in my computer flawlessly via powerline adapters. You might want to consider investing on powerline adapters.

I am finding out that Windows XP is still the superior operating system. That is what I was using before I upgraded to Windows 8 and my network was working flawlessly. Maybe they will make some improvements to the "Blue" update that is coming but I am not holding my breath. For now I will keep on trying to find answers that pertain to changing something to do with Windows 8 settings and not so much changing my hardware although I do appreciate any help given used or not.
