hi,

well found on the net that it should be possible (Win 8 off course) to sync a folder or more between 2 computers, but when i try to do this, it does not work.

Am not interested in Skydrive, used it, do not like it.

Am not interested to buy or use freeware to do so, since Win 8 offers this in the software, but has anyone been able to get this working?

Apparantly this should be possible in both directions.

Any idea's

Thanks

Jeff

Thanks Chev for the article, but i do not like Skydrive.

I want my files to stay personal, not on the internet, but above all you cannot upload folders to skydrive, which is a no-no for me.

If cloud storage is not an option for you, then your best option is to setup your own personal network attached storage (NAS). You can buy a 1TB NAS or just get a regular external hard drive if you have a USB network sharing capable wireless router. I just upgraded recently to a Netgear N600 gibabit router which has a USB network sharing feature. I've attached a 3TB hd to it and it serves as a centralized personal storage between my 2 PCs and a laptop at home.

Thank you Fourthofjuli,

no, i do not want to change my setup. It is a good solution, but it is possible to sync up to 4 computers via internet, so i was wondering to do so with 2 without the internet.

I feel it a waste of bandwide to use the internet for what i want.

Bandwidth usage within a network does not count against your bandwidth allocation. Only bandwidth outside your network (internet surfing, downloads, streaming, etc..) are counted against your bandwidth allocation. What I was suggesting is not through the internet.. it is within your home network. Read about "network attached storage".

With the setup I am suggesting, you can also access your data from an iPad, a tablet or a smartphone. Not just PCs.

To accomplish what you want, you would probably need a server to link all your PCs and sync data across all your PCs. That would be more costly (besides needing some IT know-how). Considering that you don't even know if that syncing system even exists or not. You would be giving yourself more hard time making it work. NAS is straighforward. In most cases.. just plug and play.

True, and i know that NAS will be in the local network, but the cost for NAS is not something i want. Even if it comes with a Raid1 solution.

All my pc's are installed with SSD's and i do have some 4 external drives that could do the trick, but now they are used for B-U purposes.

So 6 x B-U a day, since the data to B-U is not much.

Besides i need the money for other hardware.

But thanks

Jeff

Sorry. But adapt now rather than later. I'm not sure what your insecurities about cloud sync/storage are. But, it's likely that the cloud is your best option based on what you've described as your goal.

You seemed confused about native syncing support in Windows 8, the article I posted a link to clearly shows that Windows 8 doesn't have any type of built in syncing support, therefore you will have to use a third party program for this. :)

Check out SyncToy from MS. It has the ability to sync between 2 PC using network shared folders.

yes, Jim, i use that, but it works manually, then i prefer my Robocopy program.

Skydrive does not allow folders to upload, but abover all, i see no reason to use the internet for my files. Have enough GB at home, just was looking for a solution i want.

Besides if Sync does not work in Windows8, why is it offered then.....

If it is workable, you have the solution by now. There is no cheap way of achieving what you want. You will need a server in between your PCs. Either that or network storage.

hello guys,

well reinstalled ALLWAYSYNC, at first it was not what i was looking for, BUT since what i wanted was not possible retried
started the program, activated syncronize and set time to 1 minute, closed the program, copied a Excel file to the computer where the important files are on (pc is used as a server), and yes, 1 minute later the file was on my computer.

So guys, this is the way to go if you look for this.

hi guys,

am back with more and incredible info. Have installed Allwaysync on my 4 pc's and tested if the syncronize works for both directions and yes, it does. So changing a file on 1 of the 4 computers gives updates on all 4.

So i got want i wanted, maybe others want this to.
