Solved Powerline adapters speed test

I have 4 powerline adapters. 3 @ 200mbps & 1 @ 300mbps with wireless N capability. One of the 200mbps is connected to my HTPC for streaming videos from my network drives (computer room to living room). I am thinking about upgrading to 500mbps adapters. But I am not sure if I am even maximizing the speed of 200mbps. Will there be a difference in performance speed if I upgrade to 500mbps? Do I need 500mbps for streaming hd videos or 200 is enough? How can I test transfer speeds through powerline adapters?

Is your modem/router at least gigabit capable?

Otherwise your connection to the power line adapter will only be at 100 mb/s

What model is your modem/router

You can also get a wifi extender or repeater, unless you prefer wired... The extender/repeater gets plugged into an outlet anywhere between your wireless router and where your computer will be.. It picks up the connection from your router and re-broadcasts it from that point on, practically doubling the range.. Theyre not that big and hangs by itself on an outlet like a big adapter... Plus this gives you more mobility and you dont have to be close to a plug..

Thanks, this is a very good point. I only have a 300Mbps router.
It's a long weekend here in Canada and I am about to do my speed upgrade project over the weekend. Just got a new gigabit router, gigabit powerline and a 250GB Samsung 840 series SSD.. cheers!

Actually the 300Mbps rating refers to the max throughput possible with a wireless connection on that particular router.

Most routers that can handle 300Mbps wireless are usually Gb capable on the Ethernet, should say 10/100/1000Gb some where on the router's specs.

Hello chev65, is this the specs you are looking for? (see photo)
And yeah, I am going to utilize Gb capabilities through ethernet, that's why I also got a gigabit powerline kit (my 3rd kit).

Happy National Patriot's Day!!

Yes that router says its gigabit capable..

Another point is, is your sata ports 2 or 3? will it take advantage of the 6Gb/s transfer rate of the Samsung SSD?
Whats your motherboard model? We can find out..

Looks like you have a fun weekend planned, have fun!
