 DIRTY WORDS!

Newbie here. I just purchased a Lenovo laptop / Win 8.

I changed the Workgroup name to match my existing XP workgroup. Win 8 found the new workgroup, connected to it and changed the workgroup name. However, I cannot access the shared discs or printers.

What do I have to do to fix this, because if I can't fix it my wife will take my new toy away from me!

Don

Topgundcd,

Thanks for you suggestions, however, still no joy.

I have 2 Win XP computers hardwired to a router. They are BONNIE and DONSONY. Both belong to the Workgroup - Household. The third PC was a Toshiba that stopped working because of to many crash landings. I just replaced the Toshiba with the Lenovo. For the last 8 years, HOUSEHOLD functioned fine. The Toshiba could connect to HOUSEHOLD via hardwire or wireless.

I have changed the laptop's name to DONLENOVO and placed it on the HOUSEHOLD workgroup after following your instructions.

Now, I can see BONNIE and the laptop, but I cannot see DONSONY. Just for grins, I tried it with the laptop hardwired, but it made no difference.

I just can't believe the MS did not allow for downlevel compatibility of networking. By the way, the other PCs are using IE8 and both are at XP - SP3.

Do I have to take this new stuff back? I truly hope not to have to do that. Don

Hi Don,
I am pretty sure that there are some settings that we overlooked and since I don't use Windows XP for quite a while so I forget what it even looks like. However, I found this link and thought that you might want to look at, It's for set up Networking with XP, Vista and Windows 7. It should be the same for Windows 8 using the instruction for 7. Here's the link:

You can only use HomeGroup if using Windows 8 and Windows 7. Windows XP or Windows Vista can’t join a HomeGroup.

Who said anything about joining a Homegroup?

Actually there is a way to have a Homegroup and a Workgroup in the same network with legacy Op systems. That is precisely what the down level sharing link is about. You might be surprised at what can be done with Windows networking, it's not quite so cut and dry as you might think. The problem is that most people don't take the time to learn how to do this. ;)

Overview

The purpose of this white paper is to explain how your computers that are running previous versions of Windows can access the files and printers shared with your Homegroup on your computer(s) running Windows 7.

Never said a thing about joining a Homegroup, better reread that.

I posted a Microsoft white page link that shows how to run a Homegroup along side a Workgroup with legacy Op systems.

Your statement read,..
You can only use HomeGroup if using Windows 8 and Windows 7. Windows XP or Windows Vista can’t join a HomeGroup.

But the truth is that you can use or create a Homegroup in the same network as XP or Vista and be able to share files between them. But of course XP or Vista can't join a Homegroup although they can access folders and files contained in Library's. :)

To bad the Op isn't replying as there are plenty of ways to get sharing working with legacy Op systems. Besides the usual permission settings, using the same user name and passwords can help, you can also use the IP address \\192.168.x.x trick to get into the XP machine.

I think the poster is trying to join his Win 8 machine to an existing workgroup which I think will not work unless he does the reverse. That is, creating a homegroup from Win 8 and then make the xp machine join that group through the link that you posted.

Once again M/S shames itself. I chatted with M/S support last night and was told the only fix was to upgrade to Win 8 Pro.

The package costs $180 or an upgrade "pac" for $90.

I'm seriously thinking of taking the laptop back because it is useless to me.

You weren't using Pro? :sarc: I don't see why this won't work with the base version, I heard the only restrictions are that you can't join a Domain.

I see why not. Microsoft thinks that if you can only afford a base version, you cannot afford to buy multiple PCs. Plus, businesses are most likely to use multiple PCs and see the need for networking that's why this feature is only available for Pro, Ultimate & enterprise versions. In fact, even Remote Desktop is only available with these versions. Logical but not fair. :(

Yes remote desktop and joining a Domain has always been left out of the base versions in the past, but the ability to join a common Workgroup has always worked on every single version. Yes the Pro version will most definitely work.

I'm calling BS on this one, at the very least you should be able to use the Public folders to share with XP.

I've looked at the thread from beginning and noticed OP's WinXP computers were in a workgroup "HOUSEHOLD',, Win8 default workgroup name is "WORKGROUP',, unless that is changed to Household or unless the other pc's are not changed to "workgroup" the machines cannot see each other. I apologize for jumping into thread if this has already been addressed...

Good observation, he mentioned changing the Workgroup names and something about Windows 8 changing the name which can't really happen, however I'm pretty sure those machines aren't using the same Workgroup name otherwise this would be working. I believe the Op should try changing the Workgroup name on all machines to Workgroup which is default for Windows 8.

The original network workgroup is "Household" I change the workgroup name on the new laptop to "Household'.
The system responded back by letting me know that "Houeshold" was found and it was joined, however I cannot see any other PCs or the shared printer.

I have not as yet loaded the driver for the printer. I'm going to do that now
